Why are surveillance photos from banks and convenience stores such poor quality?

Watching the news tonight, Chase Bank provided photographs of a robbery and I could hardly make out what the person looked like...shite was all pixelated...dude is never gonna get caught. But have also seen this many times at various gas stations that make the news.

It seems in this day and age of HD video, people would invest in a high-quality system that could actually provide value to their place of business in the event of a robbery. I've seen porn that is a million times higher quality than some of these dodgy surveillance videos.

Maybe they don't want to identify themselves?

Because bankers are cheap skates. The one I work for always asks why we have so many cameras. My response is that we don't have enough. Also most banks put their cameras so damn high in the air anything they do get on camera is shite. Again, because bankers live up to that old stereotype that they are cheap. They think having one camera cover a large area from up high will save them money by not having to buy more cameras.

The same people that make that decision are the same ones that bitch when fraud takes place or a branch gets robbed. The same people that decided not to have high quality cameras or not enough cameras will then ask "Why is the picture not clear".

And yet, they never learn.

The reality is, there is no way you would be able to tell if he was even a human being or a raccoon, or a giraffe or a rhinoceros.

They're for show for the insurance company so it looks like they're ateast trying. They'd rather just collect the insurance money than actually give a shite about who robbed them

That makes me wonder how banks recover money that is stolen, do they have insurance policies for stuff like that?

because they usually have to stream, store, and back up the video on servers for a set period of time.

HD video can be a huge resource on both space and processing time.

Might be a cheap system or a poor installation. Another problem is the amount of storage hours upon hours of hd video from multiple cameras would require

Of course they have insurance policies.

They have insurance policies for just about anything you can imagine.

Banks work just like any other business, not special about them really.

A few years ago I worked for a company that specialized in designing systems to generate improved profits for businesses. Even a few years ago there were single camera systems capable of seeing 360 degrees at once with incredible quality. The problem is like most technologies it's outdated fairly quickly and places like banks don't want to drop 30 grand on a new system every couple of years. The other issue with some smaller businesses like convenience stores is that they would rather go to Sams and spend 150 bucks on a piece of shite do it yourself system.
