He escaped from Cuba when he was nine.

He joined the Army in 1975 believing he was a citizen, no one told him otherwise.

He later became a prison guard, and that required him to be a citizen. Yet he was hired. He underwent regular background checks, nothing. (Among his duties was to guard the infamous Oklahoma City bombers Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols.)

And yes, he was allowed to vote.

But only when he sought a passport for a cruise did he finally learn he wasn't a citizen.

He applied for citizenship. But of course he was turned down. (He is appealing.)

One screwup is one thing. But this many?

Mexico wouldn't let an undocumented Cuban into their country.

Proof that voter fraud happens. Non citizens voting

But for real. This is fricked up for that guy. It'll take us several years to come up with an answer for him.

Wait a minute. His parents fled Cuba. If mom and dad became naturalized citizens, wouldn't that automatically make him a citizen?

I would think they came here seeking political asylum.

Of course, not all who make it here become citizens, as we know all too well.

What level of idiot does it take for some beaurocrat to turn down this application for citizenship. Dude has been a productive member of society, paid taxes, has family...Probably a political decision

That's sad. He is a citizen in everything but the paperwork. I bet he'll be a citizen soon. Thanks for posting this.

In March the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services nixed his citizenship application.

If there's a way, they're going to screw it up.

Sorry, but shouldn't the guy remember at least something before he was 9?

Good luck to him. I've heard the citizenship process in this country is rather onerous.
