It's something I want to do before I die. Very few things are more Americana than party conventions (boaters, flags, etc).

That's pretty sad.

No.

I'm a Rand Paul fanboy and I still wouldn't go to his nomination convention.

A week of listening to politicians speak and people actually cheer politicians just doesn't seem like a dream week for me. Sorry.

shite, you don't need to be anarchist to agree with this. I may support Rand Paul but lets not pretend it isn't a den of thieves of he's speaking in.

<------ 1988 Rep Convention in New Orleans.

Also shook Reagan's hand as he walked into and left the Assembly Center. I was front row center. I was big in GOP student activity back then. And the coo coos I met and worked with then are big in state politics. Kinda frightening.

Btw Reagan had incredibly soft hands. And even though the Southern band was staring at him like he shot they mama, Reagan never broke stride and smile. (They DID NOT want to be there and there were protests at Southern with students laying on the ground in front of the bus). But Isaac Greg (I think that was the director's name) smiled and hugged Reagan he too ignoring the very bad energy emanating behind both of them.

I have a Dan Quayle story. Saw him speak one day at LSU and I was in the a Union cafeteria afterwards. I look back and see Quayle and his wife in the line behind me. She got a salad and he got chili dogs. Anyway, after I ate I left and made a phone call at these things they used to have on the wall back then Pay phones. So after I walk towards the front double doors and get mixed up in Quayle's inner circle as I'm going through the doors, Literally. The secret service had us gathered together. So I get hauled down the front steps with Dan as the SS keeps the crowd and press away from us. Dan sees my conundrum and laughs. I tell him "I can't get out!" Dan: "I see that! "

So onward we go, Dan and I towards the buses. When we get to the bus door, I grab ahold of the bus and push my way against it turning and telling Dan "this is where I get off!" Dan smiles, waves at me and on he went. That was 88.

Great story! Although the resident dems on this board probably just lost some respect they had for you.

Did you attend all three nights

Expound on this. It sounds interesting.

Now it's just a big cheesy photo op. Would have been neat to attend one that actually decided something.

Been to 3, they are a blast with the right hook ups. Private concerts, free booze, and spring break like morals.

Ain't that the truth. The tools in the SGA, Greek System officers, etc, all have their noses in the trough now. Either that, or they're lawyers who advertise on TV.

Rhett Davis was one

As shocking as this may sound, he's improved with age.

Of the four SGA presidents during my LSU years, one had a nervous breakdown in law school, and another lost his law license for a series of unethical practices, including, but not limited to, comingling client funds.

It was national news. Pretty big story. And it was quite funny bc the crowd and the future president were all excited as was the band director but the band sat there, didn't move with the meanest dirtiest look you can imagine. Didn't acknowledge Reagan at all. And he was standing right in front of them waving and smiling! I was like 20 feet away.

Here's a newspaper clipping LINK
Has a pic from the paper of Reagan holding the lsu jersey we gave him

And this guy wrote about it in what looks like his thesis. Found it googling Pages 92-95 has pics

ETA: in reading that thesis or whatever, it says the band members were prevented from speaking to the press once they returned to campus. from the looks on their faces that day, I'm sure Dan Rather et al would have gotten quite the sound bites

I don't remember, maybe 2 nights. It was at the superdome and I was in the stands, wasn't a delegate. Lots of people there. I was there for Bush's acceptance speech. The only thing I remember was him and the crowd saying the pledge of allegiance. Very awkward. I remember turning to my friend commenting about it. Very nationalistic. There was some issue with Dukakis and bush and the pledge. That was Bush's dig at Dukakis. Stopped in the middle of the speech and said it.

I will go if it's in Dallas. I think it would be interesting to see. Just bc you go doesn't mean you buy into it all. I'm still waging my personal war against our Tea Party darling state rep.

Why would you want to go to that bullshite? I can't imagine how terrible it would be to be surrounded by people that love politics that much. People that want to be career politicians and work in politics their whole life bother me.

ETA: all politicians suck and love themselves more than they love serving America.
