Any thoughts? Home based telephone nursing? Mainly an insurance "Nurse Line" or "Telephone Triage".

This exists? Isn't there some liability without physically seeing a patient?

I'm not talking about starting a new market goofball. They are everywhere. Each major insurance company has it as do many hospital systems and physician groups. Basically just giving advice over the phone and assigning a level of care for that person to seek. ER, urgent care, or advice to get them through the night to MD in the AM. Though I imagine the latter rarely happens.

Just wondered if any nurses on here had first hand experience with these jobs.

Pretty much but a lot of people like speaking to a person. Old people and nervous new parents being the major ones.

Maybe you could open a part-time 'clinic' in a strip mall.

Call it the Naughty Nurse or some such thing.

You could give 'examinations' for $100 or so. Might make some bank with this.

once I got stitches and they didn't really give me any advice at all on how to care for them...I called the nursing line listed in my insurance packet and got good info, but it sounded like it caught her completely off gaurd...like she had never actually received a call before...

They basically get paid to say "blah blah blah blah blah but you should also see a dr"

True. This is what I'm talking about. Have over a 10 years of ER experience and shitload of triage.

You are looking for this type of work? Not sure if you are asking about this type of work or are already doing it.

I would do it in a heartbeat.

I used to deal with nurses at BCBS all the time. They worked from home and basically just gave approval on insurance authorizations for things like reservoirs or omnipods for insulin pumps. Pretty easy gig it seemed. Only every once in a while did they actually require clinicals to read to determine if these supplies were necessary. Basically once the pump was approved, the supplies would be approved automatically by the nurse for every 3 or 6 months.
Coventry and Humana also uses nurses for this.

One of my coworkers is a telephone triage nurse for pediatric clinic.

She takes call certain nights when not working here. Not sure what kind of pay though.

You could always just get a registry job. That is my second job. If I'm gonna work a second job....I'm gonna get paid well for it.

I wouldn't think telephone triage pays that well.

Another coworker of mine worked part time auditing medical records for insurance companies. The pay was good but she had to travel all over the valley visiting different doctor's offices and going though all their medical records for the requested info.

You can also give flu shots during flu shot season with Mollen(usually are set up inside walmarts, etc) Pay sucks (only $20/hr) but it's easy work.
