We are planning on getting a dog around Christmas for the family and don't have a fenced yard. I've looked at the wireless fences only in passing and just need some info and suggestions.. I have right at an acre of land.. What is the difference in the ones that are like Wi-Fi and have circular range and the ones you can make a boundary following your property.. Thanks for any insight...

Or should I just put up a fence...

I don't know about the circular range, but the ones I have seen use a wire that you bury around the perimeter of the yard...apparently, the wifi ones you are talking about don't have that...

honestly, I would think the one with the buried wire would be more dependable (but more work to install)...

I think it is pretty PetSafe or shite these days, FWIW I've done two different sysytems and love both

I actually strung the wires from my new through the trees so I didn't have to bury the wires, it had never been done before and works amazing.. /partiallybragpost

I used the petsafe wire system to cover about 4 ac. Worked good till I started getting breaks in the line. That was about two years after installing the wires. Guess tree roots busted the line. Also, the collars are not that great of being water proof. My dogs stay in the water.

There wifi system is only good up to 250'. So that only lets the dog go out to 125' from center. If you live in a hood, I would just put up a fence.

We do as well, not sure I would use it on a acre, the range on the one we have I this is a 90' radius. We have a fenced back yard I have just used it to train her to stay in the front. Works great for our needs.

I'm a new fan of the wireless for one reason, it's portable. My cousin has been staying with us this week and she brought hers with her and is able to keep her dog outside. Seems to work well.

Wireless did not work for me due to interference with our metal roof and a large metal workshop next to the house. Wired system now is working great.

I have a DogWatch hidden system that I would sell you cheep. I had 1 1/2 acres fenced off at my old house. It worked great. Not using it at new house because I have a 6 foot privacy with a new kennel inside it. I have the complete system minus the collar.

Don't get a wireless fence for a mastiff. Tried that. If whatever they want is beyond the perimeter....and i mean really want (like a female)...its useless. They are too tough. Been there, done that.

I have no idea. I know when i was dealing with it i googled and it seems like many breeds do it....just dont give a shite. Some do it for fun. I am pretty sure our issue was the scent of a fine young lady about 400 yards away lol. I cant prove it but it seems that was the way he was headed(repeatedly). After awhile it stopped. I had returned the collar setup by then. I just figured it was the female going out of heat.

If you have a stubborn dog, they do not work. I had a stupid lab that didn't give a damn if he was getting shocked or not. Even after months of training, he would just walk right across the line and go wherever he wanted.

Buried wire you can tailor to the shape of your yard. Circular is just that, so the shortest property line from center becomes your radius. That could leave out half your yard.

Mine is buried and covers around 10 acres. No problems other than a contractor cutting the line after being told to watch for it. Fix was easy though. When properly trained, dogs will obey them. My dog respects the boundaries and has never run through it.

I have an Innotek brand. Collar battery charge lasts longer than advertised, 2-3 months.

wireless fence for dog
I'm paranoid as hell about this shite. We go bike riding or jogging a few times a week down our road. A few weeks ago we were jogging down the road like usual and as we approached a residence about halfway down two pitbulls began sprinting from the house towards us. My adrenaline started pumping and I prepared to defend my wife from them. Just as they were approaching the mailbox by the road they both came to an abrupt stop. Scared the hell out of me. I found out a few days ago that they have this wireless fence here. I guess I'll have to start carrying when I go for a jog just in case

How would burried wire be any different?? My wireless shocks for 30s outside the boundary - I don't even need to shock anymore, once she hears the beeb she makes a beeline inside the perimeter.

Mine too, 84 lb lab. He doesn't even wait to hear the beep. He stops about 10' from the boundary lol. His collar broke and we went a while without replacing it. Eventually, (several weeks), he started venturing a little further out, so I replaced it. First time he got close and heard the beep, he bolted back toward the house and up on the porch lol.
