Are we sure optometrists should do eye surgery w/o going to medical school?

The senate will pass HB1065 +/- SB 568 allowing them to cut on Human eyes after a 4 day course in Oklahoma if we do call our senators to stop this!
And guess who's head of the Senate Health & Welfare... David Heitmeier - an optometrist who's sole mission is legislate this through with all means necessary. It's making a mockery of medicine & surgery in Louisiana. Politics as usual I guess.

look at your eyes?
They usually just tell me "Whoooa!!! Look at that! I've never seen cones that big before! You must be nearly blind out of that eye. Hey (to a co-worker) - come take a look at these kerataconas! Wow. That's amazing"

Yep, all part of the money grab that is going to accompany the new healthcare legislation.
In an attempt to limit costs, unqualified chiropractors, nurse practitioners, optometrists, etc. will be allowed in increasing numbers in the coming years to deal with conditions they have no business dealing with.
Thanks Obama

Can I get a link?
The "money grab" ?
You sure it isn't because of a shortage of ophthalmologists? The same thing happened a few years ago with psychologists and psychiatrists. I guess that was Obama's fault, too.
I thought OBamaCare was supposed to be MORE regulation. Isn't MORE regulation BAD? Allowing optometrists to do some surgeries would be LESS regulation. LESS regulation is good (drink Brawndo!)

Why not just let the free markets sort it all out?
Posted on 5/14/14 at 11:23 pm to Sentrius
Shouldn't the free market decide this?
As it stands now, the government has placed a regulatory barrier of entry into the market. Surely this offends our resident libertarians...
Wouldn't word of a bad 'surgeon' get out after 100 or so butchered eyes and the market correct itself?

i'm not sure i would lop them in with the rest. RN plus 2 years required work exp., plus Masters for NP is fairly qualified...not for brain surgery, but quite well suited for pediatrics, family practice etc.
the fact that chiropractors invented an oversight institution outside of medical boards and call themselves 'doctors' is a farce.

They should AT LEAST be under the La State Board of medical examiners like all other surgeons, even podiatrists don't you think? LSBME has been the watchdog for all specialties for the last 120 years!!!
Why would optometry be exempt from these standards & be allowed to self govern setting up 2 standards of care. A medical standard & an OD standard?

Agreed. The free market will best determine what kinds of qualifications are needed to do eye surgery - not some government officials or some stuffy old doctors.

Seriously?
You're blaming OBama for laws the Louisiana legislature passes?
Posted on 5/14/14 at 11:30 pm to man in the stadium
Optometrists have lied their asses off and tried to convince the legislature they are qualified to do these surgical procedures. Looks like many of the idiot legislators have bought into this.

I may be libertarian but this is a legitimate and compelling public interest under public health guidelines. Medical professions with specific services requiring a license to practice is a legit public interest. I still remember how SFP went ham with this position in the OT thread a year ago, arguing in favor of what you're saying. He had good arguments but its hard for me to ignore the valid public interest part.

None of this is good for the patients. It's Heitmeier giving a gift to his optom cronies. They've cherry picked the easier higher paid surgeries to do so they bill more without medical training! No regards to the safety of the patients the represent- just ramming it down our throats!
