That I can join? I would much rather join a group of guys around laf to show me the ropes and teach me the ends and out, not to mention fishing by yourself in a yak just sounds miserable.

Its one of the most relaxing things I have ever done.

Going buy Friday. Hope its as good a fishing experience as it seems. I've always enjoyed fishing solo. Something about landing the fish without any help. Just out there on your own. Fishing how you want to fish and not having to worry about anyone else. Plus you can just get away from it all for a few hours.

I've fished in canoes, pirogues and skiffs alone. I usually enjoy it and it ALWAYS beats working.
I may upgrade from pirogue to yak soon myself, but I'm keeping the skiff.

+1
I do it to get away from all the bullshite. Put on some tunes and just paddle. Anchor and fish then paddle some more. I don't have anything against going with a friend but I surely don't need them o enjoy myself.

As a novice it just doesn't sound smart to go at it alone

I wouldn't suggest going big water alone but marsh/inshore why not? Let your people know where you're headed and wear your PFD. My family are all on each other's Find Friends app on the iPhone and they can see where I am while I'm out.

Gratz! I just bought a WS Ride 135
Also, fishing with friends is great especially your first few times out to get comfortable in your boat. But after that the solitude is really nice.

roguetiger15 - If you haven't bought your yak yet get it from amazon if you are getting a native or wilderness systems. Same price as you'd pay at pack and paddle or the backpacker but you get about $300 worth of stuff with it. LINK

My very first trip out in my kayak was a few weeks ago, launched at the Butte Larose exit and paddled all over the basin. I was neverous as hell at first but as long as you're smart about it you'll be fine.

the LKFC meets next Tuesday at Pack & Paddle at 6pm. great group of guys with lots of knowledge, and always opportunities to hook up for a fishing trip.
P&P also has numerous demo days, where you can test out various boats before you buy, and they give you 10% off for attanding(also if you are in the club).

You new yakkers need to meet us in Delacroix the weekend of the 31st. See sticky. I think Van is the only expert on the area, the rest of us are just there to fish and learn the area ourselves. It'll give you guys plenty of opportunity to get comfortable around a bunch of good guys.
