Hail trashed my roof and all the others in my neighborhood. I know nothing about roofs.
Roofer says that they will use 30 weight felt. Replace with identical shingles. And use ridge vents in place of my turbines now.

Million dollar question: Is that good?
Second million dollar question: What else do I need to be looking out for so as not to get bent over by said roofer.
Insurance covering claim.

How will they cover the holes created by the initial turbines?

Lots of roofers are lazy and don't install ridge vents properly. They should cut back the wood a few inches from the peak of your roof and should also cut out the tar paper (don't close the hole up).

If they install it rigt you'll love it. If not (most are not) your attic will hit 170

If you're going to stay in that house a long time, spend more money above the insurance claim and go aluminum. You'll never need to re-roof again.

I am told they will use plywood/decking cutouts. Not just roofing tin. Is that good? (You see the theme in my questions? )

I will be sure to ask about cutting back the decking at the ridges. Excellent suggestion and exactly why I came here for the expertise! Many thanks!

First off, get 3 bids.

That is good. Do you have 20 yr or 30 yr shingles?

Yes. You need to have soffit vents or gable vents for turbine or ridge. Just make sure you have adequate venting. And like someone said, the turbine hole should be covered/decked so nobody on the roof steps through it in the future.

Flashing. Is roofer repairing/ replacing.

Stack/ plumbing Vents- roofer should replace.

OTers own construction companies. Don't waste our time with your roof.

30 year.

Roofer will do flashing as well. Will check on soffit and gable vents. I do have some but probably not enough.

Piggy Back:

I've had three roofers knock on my door offering to do my hail damaged roof.

The damn thing looks like the day I had it done. Is this a scam? I mean I understand they will replace the roof, but is it needed?

I don't want to make an insurance claim over some bullshite.

What happens if there is damage from hail and I leave it as is? Will my house catch the A. I. D.s?

It's easy money to them. They charge full rate to the insurance company.

I work on roofs for a living and I assure you hail can destroy your stuff and it's hard to see from the ground.

My builder said the same thing. He still uses the whirly birds.

What is the damage? Will the shingles not hold to the roof? Is it a problem with decking underneath?
