From Deadspin: " FiveFingers Maker Will Pay Millions To Suckers Who Bought Its Shoes"

quote:

The favorite toe-shoe of vegan restaurant servers and 55-year-old men with ponytails has settled a class action lawsuit brought against it by what sounds like every person who ever wore its foot-condoms.

Runner's World Newswire's Matt McCue reports that though Vibram "expressly [denies] and continues to deny any wrongdoing alleged in the Actions, and neither admits nor concedes any actual or potential fault, wrongdoing or liability," the company has agreed to pay a lot of money.

...

While I've always thought the shoes were silly and just a little bit ridiculous, I am not sure why Vibram thinks that they have to settle this case on such generous terms. The claims they made to sell their shoes seems like the usual advertising hyperbole, but maybe there are some bad stories in the lawsuit that we don't know about.

BTW, the original link is not really a serious news article, but this story is making the financial news, including the WSJ: " FiveFingers Maker Vibram Moves to Settle Suit Over Health Claims."

quote:

The privately held company offered to pay a total of $3.75 million to people who bought the shoes and said it would stop making health claims in its advertisements.

The class-action plaintiffs in the suit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, argued that Vibram was able to charge nearly $100 a pair for the shoes on the basis of unsubstantiated claims that they strengthen muscles and prevent injury.

The proposed settlement was filed last week and is awaiting approval from the court.

If approved, customers who bought Vibram shoes as far back as March 2009 could be eligible for a refund of as much as $94 for every pair they purchased, according to the court filing. More than two dozen models of Vibram shoes would qualify.

The minimalist fad seems to be passing fortunately.

I don't understand, a bunch of sheep bought into a trend and now they want their money back? Are there instances where these shoes caused serious injury or emotional distress? I mean, besides the people whose hope for humanity was diminished all the more upon seeing assholes walking around with this shite.

Update this thread when all is said and done.

I'd like to collect my $94.

There must be something going on we don't know about. For ordinary Joes to be able to walk in and get $94 back per pair, you would think that people's feet were getting blown off or something.

It's worth a little bit of embarrassment to collect that cash imho.

Oh the humanity...

Embarrassed?

I tried that once to see what all the fuss was about, not my thing.

I'm just messing around early in the AM, trying to play up FiveFinger shoes like they are as OT-controversial as cargo shorts.

I like minimalist shoes, but I never bought into the goofy arse five finger fad. I like my Merrells, similar vibram soles. I am not sure if they made health claims with their adverts, but I can't remember the last time I saw a Merrell advert.

I have the Merrell ones too. The only thing I don't like about them is that the top eyelet for the laces is aluminum, and it rubs that part of my foot raw since I don't wear socks with them.

I didn't see anyone wearing them at the CCC this year.

They always had really smug looks on their faces too.

I have plantar fasciitis and can see how five fingers would contribute to it. I have some New Balance minimalist shoes with Vibram soles that I can't wear until I get past this PF, and then only sparingly.

this is pretty crazy

I guess enough retarded fatties that didn't realize they couldn't just start take off running in minimalist shoes got injured when they were probably told by someone else that VFFs were the cure all to running injuries

I've ran in VFFs for almost 8 years now and the only injury I have had was a broken pinkie toe while trail running. Damn roots snagged my toe.

I've ran 18 miles on concrete in them with no problems.

Running on NO streets would require as much support as possible, I think.

My old pair is kinda torn up now...wonder if I should get a refund and just buy a new pair...?

It would be like me returning my money back to them because I probably wouldn't buy another pair otherwise. I have too many running shoes as is

The company agreed to settle based on unsubstantiated advertisements purporting health benefits. The settlement didn't have anything to do with any actual injury to the plaintiffs as a result of wearing the product.

I am guessing other shoe manufacturers probably got tired of it when Vibram was making pretty good money selling the fad with basically no proven facts to support their advertising campaign. Sketchers got busted for that stupid rocker shoe fad they had going for awhile back as well.

I've run a lot miles in minimalist shoes as well and like them, but Vibram took their campaign a little too far.
