I am adding onto my house and my contractor says we probably will NOT be able to match the brick. What are my other options?

He has mentioned getting a brick that is close and white washing it, or using stone. Am I crazy, or do both of those options sound horrible?

I don't care for the look of siding.

Paint your brick?

Answer would probably depend on the neighborhood, the other homes etc. Siding on a home that cost under $200k, probably not a big deal if other homes have it. More expensive home and homes in the neighborhood, you will take a hit later down the line to go cheap...

Do not like the look of painted brick either.

Home is an older historic district. Built in 1929.

Have you found out who made the brick? You may be able to track down some old brick or the manufacturer might make something similar

Siding doesn't have to be or look cheap.

But I think even cheap vinyl siding would look better than mismatched brick.

You can find it but it'll be more costly than a new brick. Find out who made it and start searching the interwebs. It'll turn up somewhere

OP, go with some nice wood siding, painted or unpainted.

Any recommendations on how to find out what brick it is? My contractor thinks it's St. Joes, but I don't know how to verify.

I'm not going to have any samples until we tear out the outside wall to tie-in. I'd like to have this settled before then.

After 85 years there aren't any extras left laying around.

Don't move forward until you find that brick.

If you are dead-set on doing this, and the bricks must come off, you can cut out one brick from an inconspicuous location for now.

Find a brick mason. He'll know for sure.

I doubt it's St. Joes. They are fairly distinctive.

It's multiple colors of brick, and built on a slab.

You didn't mention where you are located. If you are in Baton Rouge, take a sample of the brick to McConnell Brick on Choctaw. If anyone can match it, they can.
