Let's have some fun.

Make a case where circumstances in the LATE 1700s correlate to 2014 where the constitution is concerned. Also, you aren't allowed to overlook one's empirical character when citing their influence......this goes for the new and the old.

(NOTE: this came from the gun rights banter.)

The Constitution didn't take effect until 1789.

And there aren't a lot of similarities between 2014 and the catalyst for the War for American Independence (improperly named the American Revolution.)

The Constitution wasn't ratified until 1788

STanding armies (1776)= police forces (2014)

Our cities are being occupied by forces with military tactics and equipment. Many used to cull the citizenry to the will of the govt in power.

Doesn't really correlate, but it does contradict.

ETA: I knew what you meant. And my answer actually does compare those years.

I dont believe the constitution was written as a document that was determinant for a specific time period.

Can you link me to that part of the document, or the federalist papers. If you can, I'll be happy to answer your question.

While true, many of the articles and subjects of those articles came from the years under colonial rule. So 1776 and the years prior is very important as far as the Constitution is concerned.

The sneaky fallacy in all this is the implication that policies made in 2014 are inherently relevant in 2014.

Here is a comparison. Back in the 18th century when the Somali Pirates messed with our ships we sent the Marines over there to wipe them out.

Today, we just make movies about them.

eh.....I'm just talking about thumping the constitution which is a document that is >200 years old and where some folks don't believe it can/should evolve to modern circumstances that were no where on the map when people had wooden teeth and shite in the woods.

Didn't Obama order special forces to take out the pirates, and they used snipers to shoot all of them?

Obama ordered special forces to deliver 1,000 pizzas to the Somali Pirates in return for them switching to slower boats.

Tis true.

And then we paid a ransom for the release of our sailors.

Very controversial back then. We were winning the war according to some, but still paid the Barbaries.
