With the 19th pick of the 2014 NFL Nation mock draft, Mike Triplett and the New Orleans Saints select Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State.

Trade details:
NO receives: 2014 first-round pick (No. 19 overall)
MIA receives: 2014 first-round pick (No. 27 overall)
2014 third-round pick (No. 91 overall)
2014 sixth-round pick (No. 202 overall)

Mike Triplett: "I didn't want to give up a 2nd-round pick. But felt the Saints could afford to give up a third and sixth. They have a deep roster already. If they don't land a center in the middle of this draft, they can sign a veteran like Jonathan Goodwin to compete with Tim Lelito. ... As you saw in free agency when they signed Jairus Byrd, they're an aggressive team looking for impact players."

Saints reporter Mike Triplett explored the possibility of New Orleans trading up in his mailbag. LINK

Well I was trying not to start a new thread but I guess I'll repost what I said in the other thread here.

In the ESPN mock draft by the bloggers, Trip just traded up to 19(giving up our 3rd and 6th) to take Cooks.

Also, which I think will happen, the Ravens took Mosley at 17. IF we really want him I think we would have to jump the Ravens(14-16 being the likely spots). Shazier went "early" to the Cards at 20.

We also decided not to take Gilbert who was there. Packers just grabbed him at 21.

Barr is gone(15th). Lee, Roby, Verrett, and Fuller are still available.

I really don't like the trade up for Cooks even though I really like Cooks, especially passing on Gilbert.

Perfectly cool with that. We can keep out second and I wouldn't be surprised to use that extra 5th to maybe get back in the third.

We would probably have to give up our 4th and two 5ths to get back in the 3rd. 5ths are worth close to jack squat.

The defense had a pretty good year.
This team has really suffered offensively for a few years now with no real deep WR threat.

Maybe Triplet believes the Saints need to become more explosive offensively to have a shot at the SB.

I really like Gilbert too, but I'm not sure he changes the Saints from SB contender to SB winner.

I just think there are too many options top to bottom(at least through round 4) at WR to be worth it to trade up for one.

I'd much rather trade up in the 2nd for Matthews(or your 2nd round WR of choice). Less costly and we still have a better player on D in the first. We could probably keep our 3rd rounder in that scenario.

I just don't see any way whatsoever that trading up for Beckham, Cooks, or Lee is worth it unless they think one of them will be All Pro.

That would be so awesome.

The Saints don't need another Possession Receiver.
They need a game changer deep-threat.

Stills doesn't exactly strike fear into the hearts of NFL corners or safeties.

You can't get that kind of talent outside of the first round.

Unless.... you want to debate Matthews as that kind of talent.

I disregard most mocks that try to simulate trades,

Does Cooks?

I was surprised he passed on Gilbert. Not a terrible trade given none of the WRs were left for us at 27 in the long run.

I would like to. I think he can be that true "#1" WR like everyone talks about. Not on the same level as CJ or Dez, but maybe close to an Andre Johnson.

He can go deep. He can leap. He can run all the routes short, medium, or long. Has great hands.

Yeah Cook is faster and I really like him and think he brings more explosion, but if we are talking value Matthews will be a better value pick with very little drop off from Cooks.

When one guy is trying to guess the trades. Yes. I agree.

When they have 32 "mock" GM's, all of them are looking out for their own interests and trying to make the best pick. They don't have access to the actual war room board, but it's a little better than a McShay mock with trades.

Somewhat.
The Saints had a vertical threat on their run to the Superbowl. That pushed defenses away from the line of scrimmage and gave them a decent running game.

Lately, they play press coverage with the safeties anticipating a screen or short pass. So, our running game is usually terrible. Cooks, or a similar talent, provides Payton and Brees and opportunity to leverage the running game more than in the past few years.

As I said previously, with the scheme change the saints went from worst defense EVER to:
4th in points,
4th in yards,
2nd in passing yards, &
19th in rushing yards.

The defense needs to create more turnovers, but what I really think the Saints were missing offense explosiveness last year.

Whoa now. I'm a huge AJ fan. I think the Texans have wasted him.

All excellent points about JM. He is the all-time SEC receiver. Although some people discount this feat as him being a stats compiler, you also have to consider that he was one of the only weapons that Vandy had.
Everyone in the stadium knew the ball was going to him, but he couldn't be stopped.

But will this transition to the NFL where he's going against PP7, Sherman, etc?

Like I said, I just don't know where the Saints are grading Cooks/Matthews.
If they feel Cooks has a Top 10 grade and is hanging around at 20. Maybe they grab that value.

I agree with that, and that's why I said they'd have to think he can be All Pro(or at least a perennial Pro Bowler).

If they think Cooks can be that good I don't have much of a problem with it. Like I said I really like him, better than Matthews(and Beckham an FAR better than Lee).

I just don't see him as being THAT good compared to what we'd have to give up and what we could get later for little drop off. It's the whole thing combined that makes me not like trading up for a WR not named Evans(only if he fell).

Edit:
And I also like Andre Johnson a lot, which is why I like Matthews a lot. I just think CJ and Dez are a bit better.
