I got really uncomfortable when he hit the clouds as he was headed for the mountain.

Wow, that's amazing. I drove up here to Alaska when I came and haven't flow in or out yet. I'm sure it's gonna look something like that when I do.

man, that is wild as hell...would be difficult for me to put that much trust in instrumentation...

There's times when the weather is so bad he never sees outside of his cockpit. It makes you realize how much you have to trust your instruments when there is a thin layer like that in the mountains.

Approach plates, GPS, ATC, and terrain radar.

A big Pucker Moment when he's heading for the mountain and dips into the cloud at the same time. I suppose you have to trust the instruments more than your eyes.

That's the general idea.

Approach plate:
Basically a chart that can show you at what altitude to fly, and where to turn and descend to get to an airport in conjunction with things like VORs and DMEs (radio beacons, essentially.)

GPS: Duh.

ATC: Air Traffic Control, can send pilots directions based on radar returns.

Terrain radar: Warns of upcoming terrain.

I also left off: ILS (Instrument Landing System) which is an imaginary line from the end of the runway out that can be intercepted by an aircraft, providing tracking directly to the runway as well as the glide slope (the descent path.)

Thank you. I knew what you meant. But the general public on a sports message board does not understand pilot acronyms.

Here is the one for Queenstown

Makes you appreciate the kind of balls it must have taken to fly before that came on the scene.

Looks like landing here. Coming through the clouds is the scariest part. Alaska Air uses NextGen satellite technology in the state

It looked a lot like that when I flew into Alaska last Thanksgiving
