WWTOTD? Gift card received has no balance on it

Our son got a Target gift card for a graduation gift from a good friend. Mrs. B asks me what to do. I said forget about it and have him send a thank you note for the gift. She wants to let the gift giver know about the absent dollar amount, $25. The burden is too much for me, so I defer to your decision.

That's a tough one. Personally, I would tell them. If I gave someone a gift, I'd like to know they actually received it.

Strange. I was recently thinking about the OT poster who this happened to a while back. His gift card was a Starbucks card from a relative or coworker, iirc.
The consensus for his thread was to just let it go.

For $25, I would probably let it go.

Keep the card for the next time Rachel from Card Services calls. Tell her you're interested in lowering your credit card rates. When it comes time to give the credit card information, give her that number.
Pretend you no speakie English as an additional delay tactic.

maybe people are catching on and just taking them without putting money on them and gifting them.

I would 100% ask them about it, it was obviously not intentional on their part.
ETA: How good can the friend really be if they only gave $25 for graduation? Seriously though, just ask them if you are close.

can you call the number on the card and see what the money was spent on and when/where? you can usually check the balance that way. It could have never been loaded with a balance correctly to begin with.

can you girly men do anything without consulting the OT for help?
be a fricking man, find your balls, call this "good friend," and let them know they screwed your kid over by giving them a bullshite $0 balance gift card.

Is $25 worth embarrassing your friend? Even if it was a mistake, they'll likely be embarrassed.
Depends on who the person is. If it was MY friend, I'd tell him in private. It it were family, acquaintance or wife's friend, I'd just give my kid $25 and call it a day.

Whenever I buy someone a gift card, before giving it I check the balance on it to make sure I didn't get scammed by the cashier or place I bought it from.

I would WANT a friend to let me know if that happened so I could make it up to them and I wouldn't be embarrassed at all. I think you would be the same way!
