Bataan Memorial March Info

Anybody here ever done this?

I did it this year. Not at White Sands but at a satellite site. Very hard, both physically and mentally, but it was well worth it to suck it up and finish.

Felt great to honor those guys.

I was going to do it a few years ago, but they were going to require me to "register" the pistol in my car with some sort of "Directorate" or some bullshite like that...requiring that I let them record the serial number. Told 'em to frick off.

So no, haven't done it, and I'm not gonna.

That sucks.

Besides that BS it's a great event. It really was worth it in the long run to honor those Vets.

Besides, it's about their memory bro.

If you really want to do it, try to find a satellite event like I did.

Crazy story

Guy had a book written about him and a few other escapees. The guy who wrote it ended up meeting my aunt, putting the pieces together and voila, that's i how I found out.

When I was in high school, one of the janitors we had was in the Bataan march. He always seemed to be walking very fast and always in a rush. The other janitor was one of only a handful to escape Jonestown. He passed away recently

Full march, 38.5 ruck, ACU's and combat boots.

No running, only walking.

Finished in 8.5 hours. Might not be the greatest time but that was a pretty rough ruck.

Also, to all you guys who had friends and family involved in the real life ordeal, it was a great honor to do this in their memory.

I have an uncle that was in the death march. I believe he was POW for 4 years there. He passed away about 10 years ago, but has a great book out if anyone is interested. Very good read!!

Sorry for your loss, even if it was years ago.

Book looks very interesting, I may see if I can get a copy tomorrow.

I have a great uncle that was in the BDM and wrote a book as well. From Mowata/Eunice area and went to basic at Barksdale. He spent the whole war as a POW and ended up in China/Russia by the end of the war. Pretty crazy stories in that book. I can't imagine going through something like that.

My grandfather wasn't on Bataan, but he was a POW in Stalag Luft IV. Russian forces were closing in on the Germans, so they had to evacuate all prison camps. Marched over 600 miles in blizzard conditions across Germany for 3 months. Many died from illness, ones that didn't dropped half their weight and suffered permanent injuries. My grandfather survived it and WWII, but died before I was born.

They were truly great men, and I thank God I have never had to go through anything like my grandfather did.

ETA: it was called the Black March

Thanks for the story.

Again, doing this March has been one of the highlights of my military career and I hope to be able to do it again.

Can't stress enough how great of an honor it was to do this event in memory of all those Soldiers who suffered.

Had a great uncle like this. I picked up him up to go on a Toledo Bend duck hunt (his last btw) in a my brand new Nissan 4 wheel drive jet black truck. First four wheel drive new vehicle I ever owned. He almost wouldn't get in it. He was a Marine.

said "I fought them slant eyed son of bitches all over southeast Asia, and I ain't buying, riding, or doing anything to support them almond eyed muthuh....ers".

He went with us. Finally.
