In a decade, Seattle’s minimum wage workers would be making double what they are today, under a plan announced this morning by Mayor Ed Murray.

Murray’s plan calls for the city’s minimum wage to climb to $15 an hour, phased in over three to seven years depending on the size of business and whether workers receive tips or benefits in addition to salary. After that, the wage would be tied to the Consumer Price Index, with estimates showing it rising above $18 an hour by 2025. Current minimum wage is $9.32 per hour

"Once again Seattle has chosen to collaborate and Seattle workers are going to get a raise,” Murray said at a morning news conference.

Murray said 21 of the 24 members on the committee he assembled to create the proposal have agreed, indicating broad support. He thanked his committee members for taking risks and showing courage. “I believe they are going to move this city forward,” he said.

This will be a perfect study of the market reaction if they do this. Lets see how it unfolds.

This. I have no problem with local governments doing this. I don't think the Federal Government should do it, other than set a very bare standard such as 4.50 and hour or something to keep people from getting ridiculously low wage.

What's going to happen is they'll price out the low wage worker and most tasks will be automated. Seattle will become a hub for rich people. The outskirts of town will be filled with worker camp type apartment complexes to bus in the low wage workers who need to clean homes, maintain gardens or daycare workers.

It is interesting

I bet we have a bunch of local progressive-owned businesses in Seattle that will try to make this work... but if that's the case why aren't they already paying their employees $15 an hour or more if they are so progressive?

Larger corporations won't like it

What about unskilled teenagers who are 15 or 16 trying to get a part time job to buy a car or save for college? They are going to be shut out here. Because if I am hiring at $15 minimum to flip burgers I am going to be awfully selective. I would want the best damn burger flipper there is at that wage.

What about jobs like what I had when I first started working at 15. I worked in the parking lots at Rangers games making $5.15 an hour. Basically what I did was guard lots and make sure only people with the right parking passes could get into my lot. No way that job is worth anything near $15 an hour, it could be done by a machine. In that case, my job would be automated.

But what about retail jobs... my sister worked at Hollister for $5.50 an hour in high school. Usually there would be 3 salespeople making $5.50 an hour, a supervisor, and a manager. At $15, there would have to be one salesperson, and a supervisor, and a manager, or the salesperson position would be eliminated and the supervisor/manager would have to do double duty.

It will absolutely price out the low wage worker... teenagers and unskilled adults will be hammered by this.

A teenager looking for job experience or a part time job... has no skills. Without the minimum wage he could be hired for $3 an hour to sweep floors or something, and in return he brings in $4 an hour to the company so the company profits off his labor. But at $15 an hour sweeping floors, he is still only bringing in $4 an hour to the company so the company loses $11 an hour by enmploying him. Therefore he gets no job at all and gains zero experience. Since he has no skills, he will not get any chances to better himself or increase the value of his labor by working since he is a loss of money for anyone who would hire him.

We all know how this movie ends, man.

The companies are simply going to pass down the costs to the consumers and that will drive market activity down with less people shopping to save their money. Its going to kill businesses and minimum wage discriminates against lesser skilled workers and teenagers looking for a part time - summer job.

And hopefully they will learn from their mistakes. Let it happen.

Lets get serious, this will be touted as a success no matter what happens

The most likely scenario, is that businesses don't lay off/fire employees, but instead just pass the increase onto the consumer with raised prices.

The media will still declare it a success because everyone is making more money, but ignoring the fact that the purchasing power and value of that money is the same as it was before the minimum wage hike.

The less likely scenario is that layoffs happen or hours are cut, but the media will find a way to spin this for good, such as "job lock" or blaming it on evil corporations/businesses or Republicans somehow. They will just push for even more government intervention in this scenario.

And in a few years they'll point to the low poverty rate within the city as "proof" that it works.

Funny thing was when I saw the thread title, I thought it meant the Washington DC mayor. I would be 100% in favor of that. They could give the employers tax credits to cover the difference, and get the funds by imposing additional taxes on nonresidents who work in the city and make over $100K a year. Nice "progressive" policy that would hit the ruling class.

Depending on the size of the business??? How is this even legal?

How can he say minimum wage is x for one company but x for a similar that has another couple of employees?

Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Liberals hate discrimination, right? Sounds a bit discriminatory to me...

On top of all of this, what about the people who already make $15/hr? Will they get equal percentage raises? Surely $15 isn't a high wage, but these people obviously posses a skill that allows them to make a considerable amount over minimum wage. Will these people be OK with a 16 year old at Burger King making as much as them?
