Drivers on the nation’s Interstates could soon be paying more to travel.

A transportation proposal sent to Congress by the Obama administration on Tuesday would remove a prohibition on tolls for existing Interstate highways, clearing the way for states to raise revenue on roads that drivers currently use at no cost.

Yeah our tax dollars don't go to roads...

quote:

Congress banned tolls on Interstates in 1956 when it created the national highway system under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The administration said lifting the toll ban would help address a shortfall in funding to pay for highway repairs. The tolls, along with other changes, could provide an additional $87 billion for aging roadways, tunnels and bridges, the administration said

I'd be for this but for one selfish reason. Tolls would reduce traffic on the interstates.

However, I know what Democrats see. They see a subsidy, a toll subsidy for low income people. Thus making my point about reducing traffic on interstates moot.

Well as cars become more fuel efficient, the upkeep for the highways must be paid for in some way. I'm ok with this. It's an actual use tax.

I don't think a usage tax in the form of tolls for existing highways will be any more popular than a fuel tax.

As automobiles become more fuel efficient, the fuel tax revenue has dwindled. At some point, they'll have to figure out how to generate tax revenue on the usage of electric vehicles.

I don't think this is the answer.

Do you believe that these tolls will be used for what they are supposed to be used for?

If we had a highway system like the autobahn sure but the American highway system is utter shite.

a fuel tax is probably more efficient way to raise revenue, as heavier cars that are harder on roads pay more.

I see why it would be unpopular though.

I think tolls on interstates are long overdue. The cars most likely to cause traffic problems (older models, shady drivers) are less likely to drive if they have to pay a toll.

I think we need congestion based pricing, to alleviate traffic issues.

Make it a requirement I guess. I'm not trying to solve corruption and out of control spending but I agree with this approach in theory.

OR...we just use the gas/diesel tax for it's intended purpose rather than using it as a giant slush fund.

If they go to a toll system, the federal fuel taxes better be either eliminated or drastically reduced.

Ya, I'm all for tolls whose revenues go to the upkeep of said road.

Of course, instead it will go to other shite, or for building your own mini-police department fiefdom like the Crescent City Connection money went to.

That's an interesting way of thinking about it. Wouldn't the government be more inclined to add lane capacity in areas with congestion since it would translate into more revenue?

You can't track the fuel tax as easily, and people will pay it regardless of what route they take.

I can also see how the rail lobby would love this.

I think not addressing the issues around congestion stem from funding issues, not political will.

Yeah, increased surface street traffic is the perfect way to solve it.

Next thing you know, the govt will be looking for ways to collect more money due to a decrease in toll revenue. Like I said, use the federal fuel taxes for their intended purpose.

This will work great until we get toll subsidies.

It's like open borders. Open borders are fine without a healthcare and welfare system for non-citizens to take advantage of.

earlier I said I think the fuel tax would be a more efficient way to address the issue. But it probably needs to be increased.
