A week ago I found a used boat at the local marine dealer. I agreed to buy it this week if he would hold it, and they agreed no problem. I called them several times over the last week to ensure we still had a deal and each time they ensured me they would NOT sell the boat. Today I do all they paperwork at the bank and call them to tell them to fax over the bill of sale and they tell me they just sold the boat. The last time I spoke with them was Saturday (they ensured me it was mine). Yesterday they were closed, and today they sold it around lunch.

I'm furious at this point so I make a post on their facebook business page. Nothing too terrible, something like this.

"Do not do business with these people their word is no good. They promised to hold a boat for me and sold it the day I was scheduled to pick It up. They are very unprofessional and I will not do business with them anymore."

So they call me later today and tell me the guy came to pick up the boat and they just couldn't sell it to him they felt to bad about what they done to me. They said the boat is mine if I want it and to please take down the post on facebook.

So at this point they made right of their wrong and I feel bad for posting that on their facebook page. Should I have just let it go?

TL;DR

First off, did you put down a down payment? If you didn't, you have no case to bitch.

I did not. Not money was exchanged and nothing was signed. They didn't ask for anything so I took their word. They seemed like really genuine people. This was not a sketchy craigslist deal. They are a large marine dealer in my area. I didn't think it would be an issue especially after speaking with them several times throughout the week

Yeah, I don't even have a facebook account. I used my wifes and she was pissed!

I feel pretty terrible they were basically begging me to take down the post. It's going to be awkward as hell picking the boat up

You'll forget about it after you pull off with it hooked up. Sounds like they are shady though so my question would be do you want to deal with them?

They probably tried to sell it to the other guy and he couldn't get approved for the loan or his check bounced or something along those lines so they went back to you.

They "said" he got there to pick it up and they felt too bad to sell it to him. I assume they seen my fb post and feared of further name smearing.

I didn't think about the other guy backing out or not able to get financing. That could very well be the case.

If I was going to piss someone off either way, I sure not make it the person with money in hand.

They just sound shady, but if you like the boat and the price is good for you, I would buy the boat.

you told the truth in your post didn't you? if so,, no, I don't think they made anything right.. the "buyer" may have been the one to back out of the deal,, and more importantly,, it didnt seem too important to "do the right thing", until after they found out about your post.
I'm not normally a vindictive person,, but I think I would have brought them back to the bargaining table.. if they didn't want to "play", the phrase "up yer arse with a red hot poker" comes to mind..

I'm the same way. I'm very non confrontational, but I was so mad I made the post on their fbook. And yes it wasn't offensive or attacking at all. Just stated what happened in our deal.

It will be interesting picking the boat up

You made a consumer report. The fair market dictated their actions.
You did nothing wrong

I'd negotiate. The other guy didn't come through on the deal, and now you're the only guy they have

Sure he has a case to bitch. They said they would hold the boat for him. They didn't.

That's really messed up on their part that they didn't even give you a call before they proceeded with the other customer to at least make sure you haven't changed your mind. Also imagine how the other customer feels about them now! He went to pickup a boat and was told "To bad we sold your boat to someone else, sorry!"
