Yeah, spending $200 on a regular freshwater fishing rod is just plain stupid. I'd rather fish out of a kayak

completely disagree, I find a great rod on a good reel will cast significantly better than a great reel on a crappy rod.

I used to think your way but I bit the bullet on a nice falcon rod a couple years ago and my eyes were opened.

You can get a damn good Rod + Reel setup for $200. I don't know whats good for freshwater, but it can't be terribly different than saltwater prices. $150 reel + $50 rod would be a slick setup

For bass fishing, there are much better rods between 100-200 than a basic all star, that will make a pretty big difference depending on the application.
