Already got a few of the same answers in here. Go with a falcon medium heavy. I use a 7'5 but any 7' and above is a good versatile rod.

Exactly a good rod paired with a good reel is much better than a pos all star with a good reel especially in freshwater applications I'd almost rather skimp on the reel than the rod a h20 mettle reel with a good rod is better than a calcutta on an allstar

Didn't know there was so much to it.
Maybe I'll get him a gift certificate with his LT license.

Agreed , for bass fishing the rod matters for sure

I'm not a rod snob but I mostly fish saltwater. Some of the freshwater guys need the perfect setup for each bait because freshwater fishing sucks balls

Falcon is a safe buy

Any idea how many bass rod/reels he has already and what kind of lures he likes to fish the most?

Duckett makes some pretty damn sweet rods in the $100s

He recently broke his old rod & I'm not sure what he had before.

For bass fishing, there are much better rods between 100-200 than a basic all star, that will make a pretty big difference depending on the application.

I don't freshwater fish so I was assuming it was similar to saltwater...guess I am wrong

That'd be a safe bet. It's easier to get a generic setup for inshore fishing for someone than for bass. It's hard if you don't know what they already have and what they like to fish most, and what they want to get next, aside from type of handle and length preference, etc.

The reel is what you should spend your money on
If you had to pick between the two, a high quality rod is much more important than a $250 reel

ETA: same with inshore unless you're just chunking a popping cork

I'd agree when you're not worrying about holding up to salt. A good rod is huge bass fishing.

You are exactly right fish all day with a revo on a ugly stick and then fish all day with a $70 reel on a good rod see which one works better for saltwater or freshwater

As I have said, I don't freshwater fish so I wasn't sure. Thought it was similar to salt.

With that said, I have both ends of the spectrum in my arsenal- basic $40 Allstar + $200 Chronarch and also my dad's $100 Falcon + $90 Caenan. Give me the Chronarch and allstar any day of the week.

I'll be switching the rods for those setups and retiring the Caenan though.

I was hoping not to do this.
But it's win/win for him.
