Does the camera really make you look bigger?

I was bored and looked up Chris Hemsworth's height and weight in Thor and he is billed at 6'4 and 215. Chris Evans, Captain America, is billed at 6'0 and 180. These guys look MUCH heavier in both movies. Do they do zero leg work and film only upper bodies or does the camera make one look that much bigger than they really are? 6'4 215 is bordering on skinny!

there is an old show biz saying that the camera adds ten pounds
whether this is still considered true with modern tech and lighting techniques, I don't know

The gym mirror certainly does.

It's my understanding that they can do all sorts of things to make actors/actresses look smaller or bigger.
i.e. Tom Cruise in every movie, hobbits, Jonah Hill's penis

a little different than his question, but the "ten pounds effect" still exist. The simple mans explination for why it happens is this: We have 2 eyes, the camera has 1 lens, when a 1 lens camera captures a 3D image that we view with 2 eyes - it "flattens" the captured light of the 3D image into a 2D image, that "flattening" is what "adds" the pounds, because you are seeing a 3D image being represented in a 2D world.

Video editing software - just like in 300 Gerald Butler didn't look anything like that - he was digitally enhanced

Unlike Alan Ladd (who hired actors based on their height), Charles Bronson, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone (according to Sharon Stone when they did a shower scene together Sly had to stand on a box), among others

Most of it comes down to camera distortion. It's much more noticeable in adjustable lenses....and especially around the edges. Also, the wider the angle, the more distortion.
As far as film......3D -> moving 2D images. Creates some level of distortion.

Someone who is 6"4 215 can look really big if they have really low body fat.

Not to me. Tanning and cutting down will make one look bigger but 215 is VERY light for 6'4. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat.

I believe 215 is his "Thor" weight.
