Gus's fried chicken, no doubt. It is a religious experience.

As far as bbq, I recommend Central BBQ, BBQ Shop, Cozy Corner.

Catch an early meal downtown then check out a Redbirds game. They've a really nice minor league park if you're into baseball. Beale street is fun for late night music.

To me there is only one cant miss place in Memphis now, and that's Gus'. Everyone needs to eat there before they die. If you love fried chicken, this is the place to be.

There used to be a place called Justine's that was one of the better restaurants I have ever been to, but it has since closed.

A&M Italian Kitchen or their more casual spinoff, Hog and Hominy. Kelly English of Iris just opened a more casual place called Second Line, but it serves a lot of New Orleans/South La. style food that you may not want to eat when elsewhere.

I found the bbq in Memphis to be lackluster, but then again restaurant bbq is always a bit worse than home cooked.

Me and the gf just went a couple of weeks ago. We went in with an open mind and wanted to try all of the Memphis bbq we could because we've heard so much about it.

That has to be some of the most disgusting ribs I've ever had in my life. Blues City Cafe in particular. Just because it falls off the bone doesn't mean it's good. They slow cook in a freaking oven with hardly any spice and then just slather bbq sauce all over it. Disgusting. And what they try to pass off as tamales should have an asterisk next to it because it is in no way, shape or form a tamale.

Rendevous had VERY GOOD bbq. I had the ribs and gf had the brisket. They were absolutely delicious. I highly recommend them.

Gus' was awesome too. Definitely the best restaurant fried chicken I've ever tasted.

I agree 110%. I cannot hype this place enough. The first time I ate there was for lunch... I liked it so much, I went back that night and ate it again for dinner. I've eaten all of the other so-called "best" fried chicken places, from Willie Mae's to Lorman Country Store, and nothing else even comes remotely close.

I also agree that Memphis BBQ is highly overrated.

please don't eat there and then post a review of Memphis BBQ. that'd be like eating at bubba gump in nola and posting a review of nola food.

I won't. But I will pimp their fried catfish and bbq shrimp. Pretty good hungover lunch fare in my couple trips there. Tamales are pretty good too.

We had the fish but not the shrimp. The catfish was cooked very well but very bland.

I wouldn't wish those "tamales" on my worst enemy.
