Apple TV, Amazon TV, Android Tv . . . got a couple of questions

It appears the point of these things is to be able to watch you itunes account (or whomever's equivalent) on your television as well as some apps and netflix.
Is this all it is?
I'm sort of lost. Can someone break down what these things do and what each service offers that is better than the others?

Get a Apple TV, help my stock out brah

Kindof, yeah.
I have an Apple TV (and then we have a PS3 that has the Amazon streaming app).
Between my HBOGo account, my iTunes account where I have downloaded stuff AND then their store where you can rent a movie from your couch, the Amazon Prime account with free streaming, and Netflix.. I'm never short on things to watch.
Anything you do on your AppleTV can be done on your computer, but I prefer to watch on the TV.
Also, AirPlay. With AirPlay, you can stream anything on your phone/iPad/laptop wirelessly onto your TV. So if you can't find anything on Netflix/iTunes/etc. (or you don't want to pay for a movie), you can stream free shite on your computer to your TV.
It's only $99 (I think the Roku is even less) and there's no monthly charge.. so I think it's well worth it.

They all do basically the same thing. They differ in the selection of content that's available. Apple TV, for example, doesn't offer an app for Amazon Prime. Here's a LINK to a pretty complete comparison of all of the devices. I personally like the Roku (I have three of them) because it offers by far the most extensive content with over a thousand channels available.

Yes to the apps part. No to this part. Go for a DLNA capable device and you can use all your home media, regardless of format, rather than being tied to a proprietary account system. Wdtv live is a popular model that does this. Some of the google play ones do as well.
AppleTV uniquely offers the ability to "throw" your Apple device (if it's new enough)'s screen to your tv. Intel WiDi does the same thing, but it's not offered in any set top boxes I know of at this point.
Otherwise, it's gateways to your online subscription content. Hooking your laptop/desktop to your tv + remote control offers far more capability and versatility.

Close to true. Not everything is AirPlay compliant. It's similar to DLNA, upnp, playtoroku, but it's more proprietary and less "open." If you fit into file types supported by it already, it's a great option.

I guess a major seller for me is hbogo. Itunes has that and amazon does not.

Make sure your provider offers HBOGo on AppleTV. I use my father in law's account to get HBOGo, he has charter. Charter will allow Roku devices to get HBOGo, but will not allow AppleTV devices. I have both Roku and AppleTVs, if I want to use my AppleTV, I have to airplay from my iMac/iPad/iPhone HBOGo app to watch it. Using the Roku, I can use just the app on the Roku.

My parents have an Apple TV. They were asking me about the Amazon movie stuff an Hulu the other day. I showed them what all came with the other similar products after that. They are giving me the Apple TV and buying a Roku 3 because of the apps.
IIRC, renting a movie on the Apple Store was like $25. frick that noise, I'd rather take my chances and steal it off of the internet

If you have any airplay compatible device, you can stream Amazon Videos to the AppleTV that way, just like I have to do with the HBOGo app.
I rip streams of a lot of movies online and use an itunes server a lot of the time. AppleTV and Apple devices are great for that with Airplay.

My desktop PC is close enough to my TV, so I just use an HDMI cable and a media center remote. Does much more than any of those App boxes, but I can see their appeal to the masses who mostly use iPads and laptops these days. I actually have a Smart TV and mostly use the netflix app.

All they have is my younger sisters iPhone, so that's not an option

It's $3-$5.
I know I can steal from the internet and stream, but I don't mind $5 to rent a movie.

I haven't looked at it in a while, but I distinctly remember looking at something and not ordering it because it was $24.95

Maybe that was to buy the movie

There are a number of other video rental apps available; you're not tied to iTunes or stealing. And $25 is steep for a rental. The only thing that may potentially cost that much is to rent an entire season of a series. To buy most videos on Amazon is under $15 (which can be streamed or downloaded to Kindle or Apple devices for offline viewing).

I get told this fairly often. I wish I had time to take people up on it. Instead, I think after Mass tonight I will forgo studying for an hour or two and put together a detailed "smart entertainment system set up/ecosystem" guide.
