Question for "oldtimers", Billy Cannon Jr. to A&M, anti Charlie Mac?

I was not in LA yet, but know Cannon Jr. was big time recruit (not sure how "big") and he went to A&M. Was this a big deal here as far as LSU and was it seen as Cannon Sr not liking Charlie Mac? I know by this time (1978?) Mac was very loved or hated based on who you were and was on his way out with many fans ready for him to leave. Appreciate any color on this.
Thanks

Jr told me "A-M paid me more". Don't know if he was kidding or not.

i don't think money was a necessity considering Cannon had an NFL career and simply could have printed Jr money. literally

So nothing's changed except for the head coach's name.

I think Jerry Stovall was the Coach at the time. Surprising since Stovall and Cannon were really good friends.

Stovall was the coach. Had the elder Cannon stated up front he didn't want his son to have to live up his legend, then only 20 years old, I think most fans could have begrudgingly accepted that. However they played with LSU to the very end, then when he signed with A&M, used that as a reason. Plus they were also considering a deal with the Yankees.

This is pretty awesome

Love Billy Cannon, but he was handling his son's dealings. And, it probably was about who offered the best deal. That is what I always heard. This was before he got in trouble. As I remember, he was always above the law, but that ended.

Jr. WAS that good. I went to high school with him. Phenomenal athlete in every sport. Drafted by the Yankees and also drafted in the 1st round by the Cowboys. Hurt his neck during his rookie year and had to retire.

Billy Cannon did not like Mac; Mac stated as much. Who cares where Cannon Jr. went anyway? By the way what does he do now? Never mind, who cares?

I was at Broadmoor, too, at the time.

The coach after the '79 season was Bo Rein until he died in January. I met Bo when he came to school for recruiting. Not sure if the coaching upheaval had anything to do with Billy's decision. I remember a lot of talk around town about it, but no specifics.

Jr. was the defensive captain for the McDonald's all american team that year. He played offense and defense and even kicked sometimes. He was that good.

Stovall wanted Cannon to play defensive end. That had something to do with him looking elsewhere. Plus, the elder Cannon had played professional football with the Houston Oilers at a time when several ex-Aggies were on that team.

I can tell you for a fact that Jack Lamabe was still recruiting Billy Cannon Jr. to play baseball at LSU in May 1980 and he was negotiating with Sr. right there in front of me over lunch at Phil's Oyster Bar on my recruiting trip to LSU. I have no idea what went down with respect to football.

That became an Aggie joke.
Q: Why did Billy Cannon Jr go to Texas A&M?
A: It was the only school that would take his daddy's money.

He most certainly was. In 1980, being 6’4, 220 and very fast wasn’t that common.
