Is $100 the new cellphone price point?

NOTE - I'M ONLY TALKING OUT-OF-CONTRACT phones here. y'all sucked into subsidized phones can take your smug 'my phone was free' discussion elsewhere.
ok, so we have this rumor from google:
And we already have these top of the line phone price points:
$179 Moto G
$199 Nexus 4 (now sold out)
$299 One Plus One Cyanagen
$339 Moto X (*for LSU peeps..$349 for everyone else)
$349 Nexus 5 (play store)
Honestly, with the # of great sub $400 phones, how can anyone seriously justify $649 for a plastic iPhone of $749 for one not made of plastic?
I know y'all are going to say I'm bashing Apple, but how the heck are they going to compete with $99 Google phones?
And we still haven't seen what Amazon has up their sleeve yet*
*i'm sure it will have 1,600 positive reviews overnight thought

The Nexus 5's launch at $349 was no doubt an insane value for the hardware. Shortly after it’s release, Motorola pushed out the Moto G for $179 then became a worldwide success, reaping massive sales in India. Rumors now coming out of MediaTek suggest Google’s getting ready to push the limit of the budget phone market with a new $99 phone.

Lots of people justify expensive toys that have much cheaper, reliable, economical, and sometimes simply better alternatives. Cars immediatley come to mind...
As long as Apple is selling well, and they are right now, they really have no reason to come down in price.

balance of power has shifted dramatically. i don't think anyone could argue outside of 'drinking the kool-aid and buying into apple's entire ecosystem' that a 5s at $749 is $400+ better than those other phones.

Do you pay a cheaper per month bill by not being "sucked into a subsidized phone"?
I'm talking you personally?

Fair enough but if that is the case why are you pimping $100 phones? Also, why aren't you an Apple fan?

have you read the specs on that new google phone? they're pretty impressive.
and technically i'm pimping $300ish dollar phones..but i think $100 is where the market is heading

i used to work for them back in the 90s..consider my opinion on par with those self-rigtheous former smokers who can't stand it when other people smoke around them.

Because when I renew my contract I'm not paying more than $100 for any phone I buy?
Unless you're breaking shite who buys a phone out of contract?

I know you did but you can't deny the quality of the products they make.

Because most people buy them with a contract. I don't know one person who has ever paid full price for an iPhone.

I have everything Apple.
You are spot on with this statement. Android makers keep making non contract phones cheaper and cheaper. As much as I love my iPhone, its going to be harder for me to justify locking myslef into a 2 year contract and still spending $100 more than I can get a no contract phone

really? i havent been under a cellphone contract since 2003.
eta it gives me a ton of leverage when i want things out of tmobile. their retentions department doesnt have the 'break your contract' fee argument to use and thats how i currently have 6 phones and pay $100.

So, you just switched to T-Mobile's new plan that is what... less than a year old?
Most people are still under contract from before that time.
