Mobile hotspot for gaming

My wife & I are saving money to buy a house (newlywed) and are living in my wife's parent's garage apartment. This causes multiple problems but the one thing that irritates me the most is that a couple weeks ago her mom found my internet-through-electrical outlet extender (not sure what it's really called)
Anyways, now whenever they experience any intermittent lag on their iPad or iPhones they blame my box and proceed to rip it out of the wall without informing me even though that box has been there for a year and no complaints before; just now that they know it's there it's a problem.
Regardless, I'm getting sick of it (I pay rent to live here) so I'm considering buying a mobile hotspot for my work related internet usage and my gaming (mostly Diablo 3 and Gary's Mod). My question is which device would work the best with quality pings in gaming? I live in Houston and currently have 2-3 bars LTE on my iPhone 5S.
Or, if there's any other solutions, please advise.
It's a detached garage apartment, for what it's worth.

Wow, they suck. Do they have Wi-Fi set up in their home abd if so can you detect any signal at all? You may can get a directional antenna and repeater to leach of them if you know their password of course.

I know their password but the signal from inside the house to the router is poor; definitely not enough for gaming.
If there were something I could connect inside the garage apartment that they would not know about (I.e. Could not see connected to their router) then I could get away with it.
As it is, I have the through-electricity box connected to a router in the apartment. The router in the house is probably about 10-15 yards away through a few walls.

I would first try to map out the apartment with an app to see if there are any areas of strong wifi signal from the in laws. You can use an app like wifi analyzer from the play store (or Apple app store equivalent.) If you can find a decent signal, you may be able to set up a repeater there.

Why not ? What speed do you connect at and what is your ping time to the router ?
You don't need much speed for gaming, just low ping and your ping should be fine.
