Question about the number one pick. It seems to be universally (or atleast primarily) accepted that the Texans will either take a QB or Clowney with the top pick. Is there any talk from people around the franchise or the fanbase about why Mack isn't being considered if they go non-QB?

I know everyone loves the idea of pairing SWAT and Clowney, but it seems to me like Mack fits the scheme and personnel better. If I ran a 4-3 Clowney would be the no-brainer pick, but from the 3-4 system the Texas run it seems like someone with Mack's skillset might fit better.

Just curious if it's being discussed or not.

All over the place.

O'Brien said possible second round QB.

If they could trade that pick back with a Cleveland or similar range and get another second, they should. Aggie heads will explode but who cares.

it's obviously being discussed a lot around here. Texans fans I've talked to are gonna be really pissed if they don't take a QB or if the QB is bridgewater. most want manzele (sp) but some are OK with the Central florida guy. the thing about it is their offense stinks and they need lots of help on that side of the ball. it should start with a QB, RB and WR's. I really can't see them improving much in one year but with 2 solid drafts they should be much improved. jff being the local boy is who they should pick imo.

Why not Mack you ask? Bc clowney is the transcendent talent hailed as the future #1 pick overall 4 years ago, and Mack played for a trucking school. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but even if clowney busts, you can always say he was the best talent, everyone knew it, and everyone would have done it. To take Mack over everyone else in the draft would be sticking your neck out on the line, and anything other than LT 2.0, it would be a hailed a mistake

I like Mack. If we were to take him, I would prAy its bc we traded back to 4

They should take Clowney. He has the speed to rush the edge in their scheme as an OLB.

RB and WR's.

Did you just imply that these are areas of need for the Texans? Or is my comprehension off a little.

I think the Manziel experiment is going to be fun to watch, I just don't want a front row seat for it. Let some desperate franchise pick him. Manziel to the texans would be a disaster.

I don't think he fits O'Brien's gameplan.

There was actually a report floating around talk radio that Rick Smith liked Mack better than Clowney per a "friend of Smith". Obviously, if they trade down, the team getting the first pick probably wants Clowney. Mack in the first and a QB in the second wouldn't be a bad deal, especially if they got a couple of extra picks in the deal. Now selling that to the fans, well . . .

But in all seriousness, to answer your question OP. Crennel's 3-4 calls for tall, athletic OLBs, think Willie McGinnest(sp) Jadeveon is almost a physical clone of McGinnest and is probably more athletic. Clowney would probably rarely have his hand in the ground but if he can learn to rush standing and drop into coverage when needed, it's game over for opposing Defenses...and that's why you take Clowney over Mack.

NFL.com's Gil Brandt believes there is a "good chance" the Texans trade down from the No. 1 overall pick. Brandt belives it could be a similar situation to the 2004 Eli Manning-Philip Rivers trade in which the Texans would select Jadeveon Clowney in a predetermined deal with another team. Brandt is not the only one suggesting the Texans could trade down. Both the Bills and the Falcons have been linked as possible trading partners for Houston.

Speak of the devil! I just googled McGinest and Clonwey to fact check my athleticism comment and straight from the man himself, basically says what I did.

CLOWNEY + CRENNEL 3-4

ETA: That jam on Steve Smith

I respect Gil Brandt. But, sometimes his information is just a bit too over the top. Also, I hope Clowney doesn't end going to a place like Buffalo.

I dont think Brandt said anything about the Falcons/Bills, that was just rotos take on it

Brandt is as connected as anyone with the Texans

That's precisely what I'm referring to. Clowney is without a doubt the prototypical design of what you'd want for a 4-3 DE. He also has the physical freak of nature athleticism to play as a 3-4 OLB.

However, he's never done it. Mack has played in this exact role throughout college and has excelled in it. Not saying it's a no-brainer to take him. I'm just curious it's not being discussed more.

Houston doesn't have the PR balls to take Mack over Clowney even though they probably want to

No I see what you're saying. If the Texans traded back, still within the top 6, and took Mack and picked up an extra second or something I'd be perfectly fine with that if I were a Texans fan. It's just Clonwey, at least IMHO, is head and shoulders and ankles above any other PROSPECT(remember, nothing is gauranteed) in this draft. So I think you take your chances.

This is the feel I get as well.

This is the same crew, however, that took Mario over Reggie so it's not unfathomable.

It's actually not. Aside from owner Bob McNair, every FO person was different. Rick Smith didn't assume the GM role until the summer after that Mario Williams draft.
