I had an issue a couple weeks ago where I had a tooth in the back of my mouth get chipped by a filling that was in it. Dentist drills it, fills it...bada bing. This morning I felt some sensitivity, it got better. Had some hot soup for lunch and it hurt like hell....pain was going down to the nerve. It was fine for most of the evening, then pain again. It isn't constant right now, but is there anything I can do to stave this off until I can get back into the dentist?

Dentists aren't real doctors.

Put an aspirin on the tooth and let it dissolve... it'll taste like crap though...

4advil then 4 more when pain comes back. Then you get to experience a root canal.

Any of the over the counter Migraine pills (Tylenol, Execedrin, etc...) should help.

Feel back there with your finger and see if you have any swelling in the gums. If so, the pain is from inflammation. Listerine will numb it some.

Ladder ibuprofen and Tylenol. Start with 600mg Ibuprofen (3 over the counter tablets), 3 hrs later 500 mg Tylenol, 3 hrs later 600mg Ibuprofen, 3 hrs later 500 mg Tylenol, rinse and repeat until your root canal is done. Hot sensitivity almost always means nerve problems. Either extract or get a root canal.

Good advice right here but I would increase the ibuprofen to 800mg and take it 3 times per day. I don't think the tylenol will help much but some people like it.

Good luck with your root canal OP.

What makes y'all think I will need a root canal? Isn't it possible the problem is the filling came out?

Hot sensitivity almost always means a nerve problem. Fillings usually don't just come out.

spontaneous pain generally indicates irriversible nerve damage. Heat sensitivity is another strong indicator that a root canal is needed.
