I'm anal about keeping my boat clean, but I'm having a bit of an issue with mildew in a couple of my compartments. My boat sleeps outside but covered. When I wash it, I let it dry completely before covering it, but that does't seem to help. I do close the compartments tho. You guys have any suggestions for prevention and cleaning/killing the mildew?

we leave old towels in the bottom of the compartments and prop all of them open

I don't cover my boat in the summer when I use it all of the time. It's under a carport so I'm not really worried about sun damage. I unload all of the compartments, take it to the carwash and spray everything out, then I prop all of the compartments open just a crack. Didn't do that last summer and had the mildew issue. No problems this summer. It's become a process.

I would imagine it'd be ok to spray diluted bleach in there to kill the mildew though right?

I do this on my bay boat from time to time in the summer. Leaving the hatches open(if you can) will help a lot

does you cover have any vents?

For winter storage, I put several of those moisture eaters in it. Summer, never have an issue, if its been dried.

I just pressure washed the mildew out. I don't see why a bleach solution would bother anything.

My father and I use charcoal briquettes in a open coffee can in each compartment. What's nice is every month or two you used it in your BBQ grill.

Mine had mildew in the front hatches but cleaning them with bleach and leaving them open when I cover it solved the problem. My cover has vents but I still keep a can of moisture absorber on the deck when I cover it.

Problem solved.

Slightly off topic and you guys probably already know this, but it never hurts to say it again: NEVER use bleach on your gelcoat unless you plan to immediately wax and buff afterwards. The bleach eats into the gelcoat and makes it susceptible to pitting, stains, and chalking.
