How effective are these at saving water if you do have one? Been thinking about installing one on my mom's house. She does a lot of gardening so I think that it would benefit her.

Small fact: cisterns are illegal in some states.

Weird, huh?

I planned on doing a complete catch water system on my new cabin(till I switched land last second and ended up having city hookups already on the property, so I'm sticking with it for now). I still plan on using all catch water for my greenhouse/aquaponics setup.

Did not know that. We had a cistern on our villa in St. Croix. It is a way of life because getting water trucked to your place is expensive. Luckily I grew up in the desert of Las Vegas and you get hammered with energy and water conservation every year in school when I was there.

It's all about water rights and stuff like that. A lot of western states are making them illegal.

Just find it odd that the law can control rainwater.

those 275 gal plastic totes with the aluminum frames make great cisterns, have 2 of them at my camp. Put them on a platform so they will gravity drain, paint the plastic so algae won't grow

That with a small propane rv type hot water heater and we have all the water we need

IIRC, in Nevada the ranchers control a lot of the water. The way the law was laid out, if you controlled the source you controlled the water. Something like that at least. It is all about politicians and their friends making money. You should be able to collect rainwater if you want.

We are building on an island and have a well for water. Daily production is a 250 gal. Minimum, but we want plenty in reserve for the times when we have lots of guests and family. We will have a 2,500 gal cistern fordrinking water from the well and a 250 gal rain catchment cistern for the garden.

No, seems like too much work to save around $10 a month.
