I just started renting my apartment on airbnb since I'm frequently away for business right now. It's fully booked for April and I'm making $2k profit after rent.

Guy that lives below me called the cops on the guests Friday night. He "forgot" I told him that people would be staying there and was confused that he heard people since he knew I was gone.

He then casually tells the building manager about the cops. Building manager calls and I'm barred from having "anyone there without me present."

Told airbnb about the incident and they cancelled the rest of the reservations without giving anyone a reason why. I lost $3k of future bookings in the next 30 days. Those guests lost a reasonable place to stay and are probably scrambling to find another.

So what do you want airbnb to do? They're not going to list a place for rent where the tenants will be kicked out. That looks bad on them.

The only solution I see is to burn your building down.

if anything, credit airbnb for telling the future guests about the issue.

I tend to agree. It sucks for sure, but you were the one vetted (background check, etc) to rent your apartment. You don't have the authority to sublease it (unless you do).

Does your lease allow you to sublet?

No tenants have been kicked out. There are some there now actually.

It's unfortunate all around. The guy below me is the issue...

Just hope you realize that there were probably some chubby orgy going on in your bed and on your furniture.

May want to burn everything.

I think Airbnb is a cool thing, but for apartments I can see an issue. Typically, the renter doesn't have the authority to sublet their apartment. I would have a problem if my neighbor (if I lived in an apartment) was subletting. If I have a small child, is the neighbor doing a background check on these renters?

There are a lot of issues with this.

typically yes, renters will all get background checked as far as i know. Obviously some owners are probably less through than others.

I think the premise is great, but obviously its up to the owner to do the background leg work of vetting their renters.
