I've been trying to get my pool ready. Had the water tested and bought all my chemicals. Now the pump won't prime. I've tried blowing it out with a drain bladder thingie and cleaning debris from the impeller (There was none). I don't have money to blow on a pool guy who takes a month to get the thing up and running (like last year). Help!

Stick a water hose in the skimmer drain. After you get it primed, backwash it

I assume you've put a hose in the Strainer basket and tried to fill it up with water and then QUICKLY attaching the cover back on while clicking it over to ON?

So I can just stick the hose alone in the skimmer? I wish I had know that. Would have saved money on the drain bladder.

Prime the pump by filling it up with water

Make sure the o-ring/gasket on the pump & filter is not bad. If there is an air leak, your pump will not prime.

Definitely! Make sure you get the cover back on quick and crank er' up while the water level is still high.

I filled the pump basket itself with water several times. Nada. Going to try the hose in the skimmer. Will report back. We just moved here in August, so I'm new at this.

Can you post a picture of your setup? I built for 5 years and could help you out better if I saw what it looks like. Which attachments are on it....etc.

Check that O ring. In fact, replace it, chances are that is the problem.

How long does it take to fill the pump? It doesn't even look like water is going to it at all right now.

First make sure your main drain (the deep one) is turned off. Handles should be just before the pump. If they are inline with the pipe they are open, perpendicular to the pipe means closed. Easier to prime just using skimmers.

If sand filter turn handle to waste or recirculate when the system is off. Easier to prime that way since your not going through the sand filter. If you turn it to waste or recirculate be sure to turn off system rotate handle back to filter after it's primed.

Check you pump lid oring and get a new one.

Put water hose in pump basket and let it run. Pull hose out and put pump lid and oring on as fast as possible and turn on power. Should see a surge of water that you added from the hose and then give it some time. Make take up to a minute or two for it to really get going and prime up. You can also close off the main drain and skimmer valve so the water does not drain out of the pump basket. Then put lid on, turn on power, and open skimmer line valve right away. This way you have a little bit more water surge through the system to prime it.

I always found when I had a pool business that the harder to prime ones primed easier when on recirculate.

If none of this works, then it's time to think about paying someone to install a Jandy flapper valve right before your pump basket. It s a valve that helps hold the water in the pump for easier priming.

Another tip if it has a sand filter. There will normally be a pet cock on top the filter that can be opened to release air which will help prime the pump.

With everything turned off, you can depressurize the filter housing with the vent valve. Then, after the pressure has dropped to where no more air is coming out, crack the seal on the clear lid on the pump strainer basket. Be careful not to open it a whole bunch because it will still have some pressure in there. Crack it ever so slightly until water starts to fill up the strainer basket area.

The pump strainer basket should fill with water from the filter at that point. When it's almost 100% full close the clear strainer lid real tight and turn the pump back on. You will have a few seconds of air hissing from the top of the vent and you'll be able to tell when it's almost void of air. Right before it sounds like it's about to spew water, close the vent. You should be up and running at that point.
