Wiki article
quote:

A vactrain (or vacuum tube train) is a proposed, as-yet-unbuilt design for future high-speed railroad transportation. It is a maglev line run through evacuated (air-less) or partly evacuated tubes or tunnels. The lack of air resistance could permit vactrains to use little power and to move at extremely high speeds, up to 4000–5000 mph (6400–8000 km/h, 2 km/s), or 5–6 times the speed of sound (Mach 1) at standard conditions.[1] Though the technology is currently being investigated for development of regional networks, advocates have suggested establishing vactrains for transcontinental routes to form a global network. Vactrain tunnels could permit very rapid intercontinental travel. Vactrains could use gravity to assist their acceleration. If such trains went as fast as predicted, the trip between Beijing and New York would take less than 2 hours, surpassing aircraft as the world's fastest mode of public transportation.

Have you heard of this? What do you think of this sort of technology?

I'm out of my depth as far as the technology is concerned, but if travel between the ends of the earth could be reduced like that I'm all for it. As long as they make the inside of that tube friendly, I would like to use it. I'm not down for riding in a metal tube with a bumpy ride though

This seems like it would be a terrorist host spot and would not link nations like some may think. Hawaii yo the west coast wouldn't work either.

One dent ...

The two big issues (other than building the infrastructure itself is) a safe way to get it moving and a safe way to stop it with a 100% success rate.

I think it is a damn good idea and will be commonplace one day...

only problem is, when there is a malfunction, it will be a hell of a wreck...

At least if something were to go wrong you wouldn't know it. I couldn't imagine the few minutes of being in a falling aircraft or being in the carnage of a train wreck. Traveling in a small tube at 5000 mph, you wouldn't even know you crashed. ..

Don't know about safety but to get it moving and to stop it they would probably introduce air to the vacuum

They did a story on it here a few weeks ago on the news. Said it is a real possibility between the islands. I would definitely ride it.

I would love to see the gradual drift of people who increasingly work 500 miles from where they buy their house because the daily "commute" is no worse than 30 minutes
