I'm watching their spring game right now on NBCSN, and they had an interview about this.
First off, the field looks like shite, and has been shite for years.
They have talked with Green Bay about what they do with their field. To do what Green Bay does would be very expensive.
The team even practices on field turf.
So in the end, they decided field turf was the best option.

The only reason LSU's field isn't terrible is because it gets replaced every year by the Bayou Country Super Fest.
