quote:

The hardest thing about communicating the deadliness of the climate problem is that it isn’t killing anyone. And just between us, let’s be honest: the average member of the public is a bit (how can I put it politely?) of a moron. It’s all well and good for the science to tell us global warming is a bigger threat than Fascism was, but Joe Q. Flyover doesn’t understand science. He wants evidence.

Is this guy trolling? I can't imagine anyone who knows anything about the scientific method squalling about presenting "evidence." I think this guy is nuttier than an East Tennessee snake handler.

I would think these two are related. Is the author a 5 year old?

Mentally, yes. The mindset is all rainbows and unicorns , forever...some will grow up, others see a political opportunity to put $ in their pocket by feeding on the ignorance and inexperience of others...

I've posted this before, but it's worth repeating:

I knew an old Phantom driver who spent several years as a POW in VN. When Linebacker II was cranking, the VN POW camp got friendly with the POWs. My friend got an invite for a cup of tea and a game of chess from the camp commandant.
While they were playing, the camp loudspeaker went off with something like, "Glorious day Comrades. Our beloved heroes have killed 50k Americans and their running dog lackey ARVN criminals last week." When my friend said, "Hey, there's something bugging me. I've been adding up all the kills and casualties that come in on that loudspeaker. Do you really think you've killed half the soldiers in the whole US military, and everyone in South Vietnam?"

El Commandante whacked him on the cheek with a swagger stick and said, "Major! YOU DO NOT LISTEN TO USE MATHEMATICS. YOU LISTEN ONLY TO UNDERSTAND!"

Somebody needs to start reprinting those "Question Authority" bumper stickers that were popular back in the 1960s.

I think he is using the "Richard Pryor" philosophy on problems, in the U.S especially.

Pryor once observed that when horrible things like Drugs/violence are happening in the inner City (by minorities) Whites just shake their heads & mostly ignore the problem. "What a pity" they sigh .

But when it reaches the Suburbs; " my God it's an epidemic" & "something must be done".

I'm assuming that the author believes( like Pryor )it has to severely affect huge numbers of Whites before real action is taken.

When there was a "White on White" crime 'epidemic' in the Inner cities like Chicago they never called it that & considered it a National problem /outrage. Automatic weapons(Prohibition gangsters weapon of choice) were banned & Prohibition repealed.

Now the inner city violence/drugs is just "Black on Black" violence . Their problem.

As always in these situations, put any other race besides "white" in the comment and ask yourself what the public response would be.

If you ever wonder why people are skeptical of climate change and global warming, you can just look at the number of people comparing it to the threat posed by Hitler, calling those who are skeptics "deniers" and evoking clear parallels to the Holocaust, and claiming things like the North Pole is now completely water.

The fact is that so much of the legitimate science gets lost in the din of people who know nothing at all about science panicking and misrepresenting things in an attempt to frighten people and gain greater power for themselves. It's not hard to figure out why people are skeptical when you have so much over-saturated hyperbole ruining the discussion.

Maybe the north pole is ice free, but don't go on a global warming fact finding trip around the south pole because your ship might be frozen solid in ice, and you'll need a helicopter to rescue you.

We all have someone in our lives who’s a climate believer—a mother, a brother, a friend, a colleague—and hopefully we’ve figured out by now that it’s not really their fault. It doesn’t mean they’re stupid, gullible or immoral. It only means they never learnt how science works, which is hardly an indictment of them. 98% of the population has never been taught.

OTOH, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between The Onion and an actual news report. I'm glad this guy admitted he was trolling before Algor referenced him as part of the consensus of leading scientists who said crab people broke the beaver dam.

Actually, it was considered a national problem and there were many, many govt agencies involved to try to curtail the violence. The difference was back then they could address the real cause violence without fear of being labeled as a hate group.

Good Grief. Can’t we just get over the whole evidence thing? What does evidence have to do with science, anyway?

If the evidence conflicts with the narrative, the narrative must take precedence. Never let the facts interfere with a good story. If a lie is repeated often enough, it becomes the truth; a big lie will flourish, while a small lie withers due to lack of interest.

Thus spake Science in the service of political interests.
Nice response.

I'm a scientist. I have multiple science degrees from a highly regarded university (I know, lol aggys). I understand the science of climate change better than most (though obviously not as well as the experts in the field).

The climate, as a whole, is getting warmer. This is an observable, measurable fact. To say it isnt is just ignorance. That being said, it really isnt the issue and is a strawman used by proponents of man made global warming. The issue is whether or not we are the major cause, and this is a political issue predicated largely on falsified data and correlation = causation fallacies.

Thank you. I'm not a scientist, but I've been trying to make this point for years now. Of course the climate is changing. Anyone can see that. The questions is why? And the answer to that question is far from obvious.

Oh Jeeze. I have 2 BS in math and computer science and I don't refer to them as "multiple" degrees.

IMHO, I think the liberal mindset is to aggrandize human influence. As far as humans are to Mother Gail, we're just a tick on my Walmart Lab's tail.

Here are my questions to you, the scientist. What kind of data are you using to determine if it is "man made climate change"? Are you looking at data from the last 10, 20, 50, 100 years? If science claims the earth is millions of years old, which I'm not saying is wrong, how can you look at the last century and say this is something new? How do you say this has never happened before? It could be part of a thousand year cycle. So how can you determine if it's normal or not? Not trolling, serious questions. TIA.
