Its his consistency...slow as he is...he is where he needs to be(intitially)..he doesnt frik up hugely...u give up 5 yards when u should give up 1 you give up ten when u should give up 4... he doesnt miss assignments. but he is slow getting there...yet they feel that, plus his knowing where to line people up...over all is better than a fast linebacker who makes plays sometimes..... highlights even. But isnt consistent and could miss an assignment...and cant line people up after audibles...overall.////////less risk...You guys act like they are evaluating talent and they either cant do it right or we just are waiting for him to explode----hes freaking football slow. period..everyone knows this. Yet Hes not a bad player by any sense. this year will show a lot

I'm pulling for the guy and we all should bc he is a tiger. there is no doubt we have more talented guys on second team but we obviously aren't at practice everyday in order to evaluate players. Our coaches are world class and I have to give them the benefit of the doubt that they will start the best player they see fit based on lots more PT than we see. Trust our coaches and pull for our players. If he starts, he's the man for the job and stop the bullshite

That was painful to read. I don't even know if you're supporting him or not. There have been players who came out of nowhere their last year. Drake Nevis comes to mind and Jack Hunt. I think the Chief knows a bit about defense and more about lb's.

Nevis didn't come outta nowhere. He'd played since he was a freshman in 07, and was part of the reasons ppl thought we'd still have a great DL in 08. And he had almost identical stats his jr yr as he did his sr year, he just never started.

But yeah, guys can flourish late in their careers.

plus his knowing where to line people up

why was the defense always seemingly out of place last season? it was the worst defense since 2008.

I hope you and everyone else that's talks out of their arse and disrespects players like Welter and JJ in a non constructive way wreck and burn. I have no remorse for you fricking idiots. These young men dedicate their bodies and throw away their health and image for this university and the whole lot of you have zero respect. All pieces of shite. You're not funny witty or hip and you aren't gaining zero respect points on this board.

Because our DTs were often being manhandled. Especially AJ, in the beginning of the year he was hurt.

WTF, are you retarded? He doesn't miss assignments?

HIS ASSIGNMENT IS TO MAKE TACKLES AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE!

I personally have no clue on what our coaches think about him. If you are "slow" in the SEC, you are usually a non effective player in the SEC. SEC schools recruit RB's that run sub 4.5 40's and those are the guys he is supposed to be able to chase down after shedding his blocks. He is not fast enough to play at this level and be above very average.
I've seen many plays where he is unblocked and still misses the tackle in the hole or makes the tackle after a 4 yd gain.
I do trust our staff that they think he was our best option at that spot, but I will never agree he was an asset to our defense. He plays hard and gives us everything he has on every play, it's just not enough at this level, IMO.
I pray he isn't our starter all year if he plays at the same effectiveness as last year. If so, you can bet the bank we lose 3 games.

Welter will see the field a lot this year. Like it or not the guy has a full year under his belt starting and IMO will have a pretty damn good year. I don't know how it will play out with the number crunch that you have and how you keep Beckwith off the field I just don't know. Guess we shall see.

Yeah I'm with you. It's cliche but football is a game of inches and when you're giving up 2-4x the amount of yardage that a good LB gives up, that ain't good. I'd rather a dude who makes plays and shuts down drives but misses an assignment once in a while than a dude who just lets offenses walk all over us.

I actually saw Welter progressing toward the end of the year and had a very good Bowl game against Iowa. This guy is giving his heart and soul to LSU, and we have faceless idiots on this board saying BS about this young man they would never say in front of his face or in a public forum. Will never understand why some get great pleasure out of tearing down anyone who wears puts their blood, sweat and tears into representing this great university. Just think about that before you have a comment to make.

no offense, but Chavis knows light years more about his players and how to develop an elite defense than you.

there is a reason Welter is out there and it isn't naked pics.

So Welter is the sole reason LSU lost 3 games. You have NO idea what you are talking about.

agree, Chavis likes him, thats good enough for me, There are 10 other players that we need to be smart at their position too
