I carpool with a friend from work. When we got to his house today, his patio table and umbrella had gotten blown over and was half was leaning on the fence. We were able to open the fence and I was going to help him pick it up, then, I barely tried to lift the umbrella and the glass top of the patio table shattered. I offered to pay half to fix. He says its ok, I felt this was a half hearted response on his part. What does the OT say?

Nah, use your money for English lessons. Or a writing class.

If you can afford it, probably would be a good notion to offer again

You could buy him lunch a few times, helping him offset the costs of replacing glass, yet not paying for it yourself.

Why would you pick it up from the umbrella instead of the table frame? Your oafish manhandling of the table at an obvious stress point directly caused its demise. That being said, you offered and he said don't worry. But if you still feel bad throw him $40.

Would he have paid your medical bills if you was injured by the shattered glass? If not, then you have your answer.

Those umbrella/glass top combos are ugly as shite and went out of style in the 80's.
He should pay you for helping update his crappy taste.

Go drain his above ground pool next.

Tell him you'll trade the chore of righteously banging his wife/gf or mom for your share of responsibility. Then PIIHB.

If he is any kind of friend he wouldn't expect you to pay.

He was lucky the wind didn't take it out the first time...

You're good friend to offer but you really shouldn't have in my opinion.

If you help someone move and you break something, are you really responsible? I think not. It's free labor!!!

you only pay when you are getting paid to do a service and break something..

helping friends is helping friends...

I would say no if I was broke..did you charge him for the labor?..If you could afford half of it or just throw him some bones I would; just to not have to worry about future tension with a friend

I had a friend borrow something and got it stolen..I know it wasn't his fault it got stolen, but I still hate the fact that he just said sorry and never attempted to repay me in any way

Different deal, IMHO. If I'd borrowed it and it got stolen, you would've had a new one.
