just read this on another site.
HOUSE BILL NO. 1082
BY REPRESENTATIVE STUART BISHOP
FISHING/LICENSES: Imposes an additional ($7.50) fee on the sale of saltwater fishing licenses
and dedicates the revenues to the 'Saltwater Fish Research and Conservation Fund', which will be used for data collection and management and conservation of recreational saltwater fish species
what say you? opinions?

Sounds like a good cause, but like every other fund, it will be taken for other purposes.

I don't mind it. If the funding goes where it is supposed to it will be good for our region and hopefully get some common sense to our snapper population. But when it comes to "research", funds get misused more than they get used for the intended purpose....

Do yall snapper fish?
anyone know the reason why we have a seperate salt and freshwater license, and people who buy a saltwater license must buy a freshwater, but not the other way around. sounds like a money thing to me.
personally, i dont snapper fish and don't plan on it, i dont agree with this bill for that reason and know others like that

Considering everything else about fishing is expensive it's about time the license fee catches up.

Didn't Jindal once before rob money that was allocated for the coast/fishing and put it somewhere else in the state budget shortfalls?
I remember reading about it but it's been a while. Someone help me out.

I thought he robbed the rigs to reefs program, but I could be wrong.

agreed. I just responded to maisweh on LASM:
Other states
Here are the SW license RESIDENT fees for other gulf states:
Florida: $17
Alabama: $22.40
Mississippi: $10 but basic is $32
Louisiana: $5.50 currently
Texas: $35.00
We are waaaay lower than other states and offer alot more SW fishing opportunities than other states. If our SW fee goes up to $13, we are still less than other gulf states.
This fee is going to help support WLF's stand against the feds, which I support wholly. The feds have been taking away offshore resources for way too long based on bad or no science at all. This increase is dedicated to providing science to combat what the feds are doing/not doing.
ETA: Lifetime License FTW!!

motorboat, do you have the combined prices for the license, since its not possible to only get a saltwater license?
also, just because its cheaper than other states, doesn't mean its okay to go up.
i see and understand what they're trying to do, but if its going to offshore studies, let offshore fishermen fund it.

Glad i have a lifetime license and also bought one for all three of my kids. They will only continue to rise.

Question about a lifetime. If I get one, then move out of state, is it still valid? I'm about to move to Houston and want to get it done before then.
Posted on 4/7/14 at 9:15 am to KG6
Yep still valid. That is one of the big reasons i bought them for my young kids no telling where they might end up in life.

Florida: SW $17 (there is no requirement for basic/FW)
Alabama: $22.40 (there is no requirement for basic/FW)
Mississippi: $10 but basic is $32
Louisiana: Basic $9.50 SW $5.50
Texas: $35.00 ((there is no requirement for basic/FW)
So we are considerably lower than comparable states.
OK, but we are whining here about an increase and despite the fact that we have more SW opportunities than 3 out of the other four states.
Then by that logic, I guess my tax dollars shouldn't fund public education either since my kids will never go to public school?
Again, this is a nominal fee and will likely be negotiated down to $5. I can't step out on my front porch without spending $5

So I'll never have to pay any out of state fees? Just duck stamps and what not? I'm signing up today if thats the case

Yep. there are few extras you may have to purchase, crab gear for example, but it is an awesome deal because, as we see here, the fees will only go up.

The freshwater license is only required if you fish above the freshwater/saltwater division line. If you fish within both areas then you are required to purchase both a fresh/salt license.
As DrTyger said, lifetime is the way to go.

I think thats wrong. i don't fish above the division line and i have to get both. i'm pretty sure its if you buy a saltwater, you have to get the freshwater also. if you fish freshwater, you dont have to get salt.
