Philip Humber recorded the last out on a wild pitch strikeout. The batter spent time arguing about checking his swing instead of running to first. The ball bounced pretty far away and he may have been able to beat it out if he tried.

That brings me to the question. If a pitcher retires 26 in a row then strikes you out on a pitch in the dirt that bounces too far away from the catcher to throw you out if you hustled to 1st.. Do you tip your hat and say he's earned the perfect game or do you run down to 1st?

Say it's a 10-0 game here.

1-0 and you try to get on base any way possible

but it's my job. I'm not going to look like a slapdick for all eternity so someone at a competing "company" can look like a badass

Didn't he almost beat it out anyways?

Edit: never mind clearly not the same game.

No it's not. You're playing a sport, you try your hardest. If you're a single away from the cycle do you expect the pitcher to lob you the ball?
The pitcher doesn't want you to cheapen his accomplishment by just giving it to him

The exception seems to be match play in golf. If Bob finishes the hole in 4 and Jim is at 2 with a 6 inch putt remaining, Bob concedes the hole. It's possible to miss a 6 inch putt. I've done it quite a few times.

Isn't the wild pitch recorded even if he doesn't make the base, so the perfect game is ruined?

Yea I guess that's an "unwritten rule"
Not beating out a past ball 3rd strike is not an "unwritten rule"

A few thoughts:

-I doubt the pitcher would want you to do that. I know I wouldn't. I don't want to be given a perfect game. Even if it's on the last pitch. Last pitch is the same as the first. And you'd try and beat it out on the first.

-If you did tip your hat and obviously not try your hardest, you're making it about you. People will talk about you not hustling on the last pitch as part of that perfect game every time it's brought up. Seems selfish.

-You try and beat it out. Period.

No, it wouldn't be recorded if he doesn't make the base.

If i remember that pitch correctly, the batter absolutely checked his swing on pitch way outside and full count. Humber didnt earn that PG anyway.

You be the judge...
