He was tested at McNeese? Don't they use a sliding scale?

He lived here in Tampa. I'd see him from time to time before he passed away a year or more ago now. He seemed very approachable for a man of his stature and background.

my uncle-in-law was his college roommate at West Point and in his wedding...bad mutherhubbard.

168 sounds low, fwiw.

Worked closely with a LtCol who was on his staff.

The stories he told of this guy losing his temper were some of my favorite barroom tales. They rarely mention it.

A quick nugget, when the Iraqi Generals showed up to surrender, they didn't want to give up their handguns before entering the tent. He told them "frick it. Go back to Baghdad, we will meet you there." They surrendered their pistols.

I'm posting from a phone with auto correct. I will try and make a correction but I assure you I was not trying to besmirch his nickname.

Why would this elicit surprise?

He was obviously a brilliant man.

Didn't Norman turn down his fifth star. Said something along the lines "no living American today deserves it"

Generals or Admirals with multiple stars are usually very smart people.

Schwarzkopf also gained a great respect for certain military leaders at West Point, notably Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman and Creighton Abrams, believing them excellent commanders who nonetheless did not glorify war.

I definitely miss that caliber of a military leader being at the forefront of our military these days.

I wish he would've been president instead of Clinton.

With the exception of Eisenhower and a couple of others, career military men haven't sought the presidency, and I think that's a good thing, overall. The founders wisely kept the civilian and military sides of our government separate. It's healthier for our democracy that Flag officers not view higher political office as their next logical career step.

I was watching the news with my dad during the first Gulf War. Schwarkopf came on the TV and my dad said Normam was an upper classman while my dad was attending West Point. Said Schwarzkopf was a real prick and that's why he makes a great General.

Being a big name military man was basically the way to reach the presidency in the 1800s. It's much more than a couple that sought the office.
