Is a level 100 troll. I don't listen to anything she has to say. All I gotta say is, do you you want to bust your back picking strawberries for $6/hour?

99.5% of the American work force wouldn't do it for $8 an hour. That is why I have no problem if an illegal wants to come in and work the fields.

If we truly lived in a country where people had to work for their food and shelter or starve, they damn sure would take these kind of jobs at $7 or $8 an hour I bet.

A few weeks ago, I spent a couple of days with a high school classmate, I hadn't seen in awhile. He's a crawfish and rice farmer in SW LA. He has two Mexican farm hands. He said if it wasn't for them, he wouldn't be able to find any help to run his farm. He pays above minimum wage and provides clean comfortable housing. And contrary to what Coulter believes, he sn't a multimillionaire by a long shot. He also said his farm hands were reliable hard workers.

It's impossible to find reliable hands outside of "illegals".

the view that employers should be responsible for problems caused by the government not enforcing the borders is as absurd as the idea that I should pay pollution penalties for buying BP products....or wait, how about we fine households who purchase fruit and vegetables picked by illegals since they're the ones creating the market for the products...

employers are not the cause of the problem, the government is for not deporting those found here illegally.

typical populist BS putting blame on the ones with the most money instead of the ones who actually responsible..

same nonsense as

blaming only Wall Street because morons borrowed more than they could ever pay back

blaming only Enron when employees put 100% of their retirement in one investment

blaming only Madoff or Stanford instead of the greedy investors trying to get above market returns without properly researching the entity

this is not to say those individuals or entities that commit fraud should not be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but media sells to the masses and they do that by telling the masses they're not responsible for their problems, the big bad guy with all the money is, so let's get him to pay for all of society's ills

If Mexican farm labor is so much cheaper, maybe we should be growing our fruits and vegetables in Mexico. There's absolutely no reason to import Mexicans to do something they could do at home and then sell to us. I believe this is what economists call "competitive advantage."

It's comparative advantage

On the other hand, if you work for $7 an hour these days--without food stamps or stealing or dumpster diving--you probably will starve.

I hear this alot from my small business owner friends, especially in construction.

Any legal resident in this area of the country with half a brain and a little desire to work can make decent money in oil and gas. The lowest end of the job market needs just can't find anyone to work.
As sad as it is, I would almost rather see fast food restaurants hire illegals in some form so maybe they can pay some taxes and social security.

That's what we do. We farm cotton, corn, and soybeans. 3 of our 5 hands are Mexicans that come in during the growing season. They make somewhere around $9.75/hr, have housing provided on the farm, and access to a late model F-350 to do things like go to the store in. But they also have their own vehicle that they just leave here year round to do more personal stuff. It's works out great. They work hard, are pretty smart, and are happy to be here and we're happy to have them. Makes my job a lot easier to have competent labor.

That's because we are paying so many people to not work. I was taking a tour in the Puerto Vallarta area several years ago and the tour guide was basically laughing at our welfare system and how silly it was to pay people to not work.

I don't see the "illegals", who are being paid $7/hr, starving at all.

This is one of America's main problems these days....people expect to make lots of money while not having to really work for it. There are plenty examples of folks working more than one job or multiple shifts at one job for minimum wage and they make ends meet.

Our political system at its worst! Both parties are complicit; 1 party bought (and is also owned) by the rich & the other party bought the lower income brackets. Both parties try to scare the shite out of and buy the middle class.

And they often need government assistance. In other words, taxpayers are subsidizing employers. Walmart being the famous example.

I put illegals in quote because all of ours are 100% legal(just Mexican) and on work visas. Most people don't do that because the government makes it such a pain in the arse...we had to hire someone just to do the paperwork properly

Mexican farm labor is not cheaper than domestic labor but you get a lot better harder worker and more bang for your buck. Considering you have to pay them so many hours a week rain or shine, provide housing and pay electricity and water, and provide them transportation its more expensive than domestic hands but they work their arse off and you have to tell them to quit working at the end of the day.
