Me and some buddies decided to get after some hogs this morning. We caught a Sow and three of her piglets. Jumped three more pigs but they got away as we were catching the little piggies. Had 6 black mouth curs and pigs running everywhere.

As an FYI...

If in Louisiana it's now a felony to transport live hogs.

Great job on lowering the population though.

They are headed to a baying pen. They will be fed out and either slaughtered once they get a little more size or be used to train pups.

Except for this little female. The dogs killed her before we could get to her. So she will be going on the grill.

I think I have killed Cane Cutter Rabbits that were bigger.

I don't think thats right. I have heard that, but never seen the law. And if it is true, Green Jeans isn't enforcing it.

Unless it's changed, there is no such thing as a "wild" hog in Louisiana-under the law. One reason you can hunt them year-round, and at 12 noon or 12 midnight and there's no limit.

Now I wouldn't cross state lines with them.

Guys, I haven't taken the time to read the law, however Mike Strain is the head of the department of forestry and agriculture. He told me verbatim one of the laws he got passed was prohibiting live transportation of feral hogs.

I like the idea of worming them fattening them up and butchering them as the OP states. However he said too many people releasing them elsewhere was the problem so it's all outlawed now.

Link from LSU Ag site on "New Hog Reg's suggests otherwise.

I did find something (not sure how valid the source is) about only limited during WMA seasons.

quote:

Two special seasons exist for feral hogs in certain WMAs. Hunters may hunt with the aid of dogs “by-permit-only” in Attakapas, Bodcau, Boeuf, Dewey Wills, Jackson-Bienville, Pass a Loutre, Pearl River, Red River, Sabine and Three Rivers WMAs. The season is typically from February 1 to 28. This is the only time of the year dogs may be used to hunt feral pigs. Contact the Minden, Pineville, Hammond or Opelousas WMU offices for information on permits.

The second is a special shotgun season from February 16 to March 31 in Atchafalaya Delta, Pass-a-Loutre, Pointe-aux-Chenes and Salvador WMAs. During these seasons, hunters may kill hogs with shotguns loaded with buckshot or slugs. During these seasons, feral hogs may not be transported live under any conditions.
