I recently moved from Louisiana to Texas. I have a concealed handgun permit for Louisiana but am now a resident of Texas. Is my Louisiana permit still good if I am no longer a resident?

I believe it is no longer good with a change in residence but you may have a grace period. I can't recall for sure for some reason though so curious as well from someone in the know.

LSP should specify how long your permit is good for until you should change to a Texas permit.

Give them a call to see the specifics. I don't deal with enough of the residency change questions to know the exact answer.

it seems I am more knowledgeable about this than bapple

the simple answer is, yes.. because Louisiana has reciprocity with texas

i would change over if you have the extra $$$, but I have a Va ccp and when/if i move back to La I will never change over due to $$$, i don't know how much it would cost, but it would cost money and I ain't about to give some other state $$$ so I can carry

I believe you're wrong. I think your CCL has to match your state ID or state of residence to remain legal.

I could've told him that. I figured he was specifically asking if the LA permit lasts 5 years, regardless of LA residency.

But thanks for clearing it up!

oh shite, i totally missed where he said he is now a resident

ok then, if you have a texas ID then no, it is not valid and must get a CCP and my friend that moved from Va to La to Tejas told me it costs $$$, but he is pretty tight with money

if you still have your La ID/drivers license, then yes, it is still good

this is what I would do, when I moved to La to go to LSU i worked for 6 months at a part time job so I could get a drivers license and get in state tuition when i went and got my drivers license they asked me to turn over my Va drivers so they could chop it up,(it is illegal to have a drivers license from two different state, it is a pretty lame law that I admittedly have not obeyed for some time), I did not turn over my Va ID and said I lost it, the girl said,"ok, when they call your name, they'll take you picture and give you your new La ID" Me-->

so, i got to keep my Va ID so if i ever got questioned/asked for my CCP then i gave them that and my La ID for a backup if I needed it besides for in state tuition

I have gone to both Va and La DMV's twice to renew both ID's/DL and not once has it ever been brought up about having two state ID/DL, they just want your $$$

Unless he is a licensed attorney, I suggest he stay out of it.

And, even if he is a licensed attorney, he should still stay out of it.

Are you referring to the thread on the O-T where a guy is asking if it's okay to pull a gun on someone in a store?

If I'm not mistaken, LA issues to resident only but Texas issues to residents and non-residents. Your Texas CWP should be honored in LA. For anyone interested, Utah has the highest number of states honoring reciprocity with their CWP. They also offer resident and non-resident permits. Application and Reciprocity map
