Gun Bill shot down in Alabama House Committee

The legislation would have allowed people to carry loaded pistols in their vehicles with a concealed carry permit. Several local law enforcement agencies spent Wednesday in Montgomery strongly opposing the bill. Many stated it would trigger safety concerns, especially during traffic stops.

As the law stands now, without a permit, handguns kept inside of a vehicle are required to be unloaded, locked away and out of reach. "You walk up on a car, that individual may be wanted, that individual may be armed, you the police officer, don't know that," Speziale said.

I really don't get logic like this. Chances are if someone is considering using a gun on an officer at a traffic stop, they don't give a good god damn about a law saying their glock should be empty.

Legal in Louisiana, cops don't appear to have a issue here...

Laws only effect law abiding citizens. One day people may realize this.

Somewhat surprised this bill didn't get passed. As it is now, you can open carry a pistol on your hip all day but as soon as you get in your car with it you're a criminal.
I think the reason this ultimately got shot down was police lobbying against it. They claimed it was for safety reasons, but that's obviously bullshite as FL and MS don't seem to have an issue. It came down to local departments being afraid losing out on concealed permit revenues because a lot of people only have one just so they can carry in their vehicle.

I honestly didn't even know it was illegal. My dad has been a criminal for my entire life and probably much beyond that

Someone made the point that, since it is legal to open carry without a permit but illegal to have that same weapon in your car without a permit, one could possibly drive with their gun in their hand hanging out the window and technically still be within the law.

Damn. This kind of makes me want to move

I'm a cop in Louisiana and I have no issue with it. Your vehicle is an extension of your home in Louisiana.
It's always a good idea to let the LEO know that there is a weapon in the vehicle. I always appreciate it when people do.

Article and the law doesn't make sense. You CAN carry a loaded weapon in the car with a CCW permit in Alabama. For non-CCW holders the unloaded weapon and ammo just have to be in separate cases and outside of the "lunge" distance. Researched all this when helping my gf get her CCW.

Duwayne doesn't run anything. When you have 104 seats in a legislative body in relatively small state like Alabama, you are going to get people serving like this. He's a good guy, just a small town guy that owns a Western wear store.
It's an election year and the AEA is running people in GOP primaries. It's an issue that got laughed at nationally and by the media, but is popular with GOP primary voters in his district.

So gd dysfunctional.

quote:Legal in Texas to do this. Would be interested to see any data on how often CCFLs shoot at cops during traffic stops.

I looked but could not find anything. I'm thinking it's not a big problem.

If you knew the community Speziale serves, you would definitely know where he is coming from.
That being said, "Chances are if someone is considering using a gun on an officer at a traffic stop, they don't give a good god damn about a law saying their glock should be empty."
How true.

Maybe they will re-write the law to be able to carry it in plain view in the vehicle similar to the Georgia law.

In MS you don't even need a permit. Yourr car is an extension of your home

Finally ... there's a real purpose for the sunroof.
