Heading down to Grand Cayman in a few weeks for a 6 day vacation. What are some must try things? Any advice on activities, places to go and see, restaurants, bars, etc is appreciated.

Activities: Stingray city

Restaurant: Casanova (ask to sit outside on the beach)

Those 5 or 6 tables on the beach are where it's at.

My husband and I were there last summer. We went mostly for him to dive and we are in our 50's, so night life wasn't our thing. But, these are my tips for you. First, it is very expensive. Plan to spend almost double whatever you budget. We did not find a need for a car and saved on that money because there is a transportation system of vans that runs all day and into the night. You just start walking in the direction you want to go and they will honk their horn to see if you need a ride and if you do, just flag them down and they pick you up. It was not expensive, I think $1 (and they take US dollars everywhere) per person to go anywhere on Seven Mile Island and I think $2 pp to go into Georgetown. Georgetown is extremely crowded when the cruise ships are in. But, if you are wanting to do any shopping, it's really the time to go because a lot of the shops close down when the boats are gone. We found a great local bar called Rackams in Georgetown and we went to it almost everyday for lunch and drinks. It's a spot where a lot of the locals hang out and we met some very interesting people. The bartenders are great. They are all ex-pats, many from Canada who have moved down there. If you dive, I can get the name of the Captain my husband used. My husband really liked him. Don't eat at the hotels. The food is exorbitantly expensive. There are a lot of local places on Seven Mile Island and in Georgetown with really great food. If I think of anything else, I will edit again. We had a wonderful time. The island residents are really great and will go out of their way to help you because tourism is their main industry.

I remembered that the Bartenders would always invite us to come back at night because there would be something going on and apparently it can get wild and crazy. We never went at night. But you might want to check that out.

If you like to drink. Take full advantage of the Duty Free to bring booze. Bought a Cay Beer (brewed locally) on the beach at the hotel in a plastic 8 oz. cup. Baller or not, the $8 price set me on my heels. Bartender just laughed and was like: "First drink you bought here?"

Best thing I did: Went to the local Jerk Chicken stand outside the bar at 2 am. Hung out with some locals, ate some serious good food and got rip-roaring ummm... drunk.

Restaurants:
Sunshine Grill (lunch)
Calypso Grill
The Cracked Conch
Edoardo's

The best beach location is Seven Mile Beach.

Stingray City is cool.

Get a mudslide at Rum Point.

Seven mile beach for sun bathing. Water there is like a mill pond on most days.

Snorkel at Cemetery beach. It is on the north end of Seven Mile Beach.

Rum point on the north side is great to spend a full day. Shops, food and beautiful water in a very quaint little area.

Hell is okay to see for about an hour ....max.

Lighthouse Rest. around Boddentown is fun at night. They feed 5-6 foot Tarpon there below the deck.

Snorkel and hang out at Smith Cove on the SW end of the island.

Eat at a number of great restaurants along the Seven Mile Beach strip.

Stingray City if you are okay with hanging out with all the booked tour trash from the cruise ships. Not recommended.

Bike rides on any of the trails.

What is great about GC?

English speaking and very laid back. Lots of money on the island and very little of the poverty you see on most other islands. You will feel safe walking around anywhere at any time. Very modern in regards to infrastructure. Super markets are of the full service variety with nice delis, bakery's, etc..

What is lacking?

Just the geography. While Seven Mile Beach is perhaps the most beautiful continuous stretch of water in the world, the islands highest point is only around 50 ft or so. Not the great vistas you would have in say, St. Lucia, St. John, Barbados, etc.. But it is a worthwhile trade off to be away from the poverty and trash common to many islands.

I think their exchange rate is pretty constant and amounts to about $1.00 GC= $1.22 US, but you can spend US dollars there.

A lot of places are closed on Saturday because many locals are Seventh Day Adventists, so just beware of that.

Beautiful beaches and diving.

Thanks for all the info so far. We did know in advance how expensive it was, but like someone already said, it's a tradeoff with the poor and unsafe areas found on other islands. I've been to St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico... so just looking for something different with the Caymans.
