Aside from 2007, I don't think there has been a wackier season in modern college football history. I mean, bloody hell, Virginia was #1 in both the AP and Coaches Polls for 3 weeks in the middle of the season. Arguably the best team that year - the Miami Hurricanes - finished 10-2 that season and destroyed #3 Texas in the Cotton Bowl, 46-3. But the teams that won the national title that season were Colorado (AP champs) and Georgia Tech (UPI/Coaches champs). Colorado finished 10-1-1, courtesy of an extra down at the end of their game against Missouri, and Georgia Tech finished 11-0-1, albeit with an easier schedule.

That was the strangest single season I remember. Going into that new years day the top five teams were said to each have a shot at getting at least a share of the title.

That Miami team would've destroyed Colorado or Ga Tech.

They had 18 personal foul penalties en route to that 43-point win over #3 Texas.

Look at 1998, and tell me which 4 teams you would have taken to the Playoff.

Tenn
FSU
OSU
UCLA
Wisconsin
Tulane
Arizona
Kansas State

All those teams has 0 or 1 loss going into bowl games. Tulane and Tenn were undefeated. Then you have 6 BCS programs at 1 loss...have fun

Colorado should've lost their bowl game to Notre Dame as well, but the refs bailed them out in that game too.

Someone watch The U on 30 for 30.

Can't believe Miami lost to BYU first game of the season.

Well...I'd automatically rule out Arizona because their one loss was a 52-28 destruction by UCLA. And even though Tulane finished undefeated I would throw them out due to being a mid-major and their schedule being soft (they didn't play a single ranked team all year). I would also throw UCLA out due to their loss to unranked Miami at the end of the year. Also their subsequent Rose Bowl loss doesn't help either.

So that leaves us: Tennessee, Florida State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Kansas State.

Tennessee is obviously in. They're #1 and 12-0. Kansas State, sadly, has to go because they lost last and lost in the Big 12 Championship Game.

So that leaves us with #1 Tennessee, #2 Florida State, #3 Ohio State and #5 Wisconsin. So the match-ups would be:

#1 Tennessee vs. #5 Wisconsin
#2 Florida State vs. #3 Ohio State

BYU was ranked as high as #4 in late 1990 but cratered after Detmer won the Heisman and got killed by A&M in their bowl game.

Kansas State was still ranked #3 after the regular season, and they had to put in a new BCS rule "Kansas State rule" because of it.

That Miami team was sort of coming together end of the year, and UCLA/Miami had to reschedule I think because of a storm, so the game moved from Sept to end of the year. OSU lost to an unranked MSU team that year at home, which was somewhat inexcusable (although that game was just weird for sure). Wisky lost by 3 scores to Michigan, as did FSU to an unranked NC State team

Back then it was much better to lose early, now I'm not sure FSU sneaks in over OSU

That was one of the best games I've ever seen. UVA had Herman and Shawn Moore and Tech had a slew of great players.

The most ridiculous thing I have ever seen was the last day of that 1998 season.

The day started with the projected BCS championship being UCLA vs. Tennessee.

Then UCLA lost to an average Miami team. Edgerrin James went apeshit. That made it K-State vs. Tennessee.

Then K-State blew a two touchdown in the Big 12 Championship and aTm beat them. That made it FSU vs. Tennessee.

Then Tennessee played Miss. State that night. Mississippi State returned a punt in the 4th quarter of that game and had the lead, and people were beginning to completely melt down. But then Tennessee took over and won.

And the only reason why Tennessee was there in the first place was Clint frickING Stoerner.

But as for the "Kansas State Rule," they fell to three and everybody skipped them out of the BCS and into the Alamo Bowl, where Drew Brees went crazy and beat them too.

That was even crazier than the last day of 2007, in my opinion.
