Do you kill the grass first, dig it up, or put something over it so it can't grow through the bottom of the raised bed? The bed will only be 3'x8ft along a fence. How does laying a 3x8 piece of plywood down with 2x6s lining the edge holding in the soil?

I'm about to build one as well

Also, just use potting soil or something else?

You want it to be able to drain, so I wouldn't put anything too impermeable underneath. Old newspaper doubled-up works great as a weed deterrent and should still allow it to drain just fine.

Throw down a little ant killer, cover with newspaper, and throw your dirt on top.

Works well for a small space.

Thick plastic also works well but obviously doesnt drain.

I weedeated the grass down to nothing, then tilled it. I'm using that black fabric on top to keep grass/weeds down. I'd be hesitant to put plywood down, seems like you'd have drainage issues and your plants' roots will probably go deeper than that.

Built mine Sunday, 12'x 4, some dirt is coming today. I tilled under one till I realized it was all clay and I was putting down weed blocker. I did not till under the second.

That path in between wide enough for your mower? I put pavers in between mine and made sure it was the right distance for 2 of them.

is that pine? is it treated? did you seal it?

i'm looking for some rough cut 2" x 12" cedar so i wouldn't have to seal it

Untreated pine, it is built on land I don't own and don't want to eat food grown in treated wood.

What a bunch of suburbanite yuppies...

Apply weed killer to a good old fashion plant bed, till it up once it turns brown. Yes, you may have to do some weeding until the plants shade out the undergrowth. It's called gardening.

Everybody wants to do some pintrest project they saw on their aunts facebook page...

Real mean have real gardens with irrigation.

I use 8inch deep boards and staple weed cloth to the bottom. Never had many issues with weeds in 4 years.

I used the black plastic on one box and it drained too poorly, now I only use weed cloth.

I put the boxes right down on my yard, no pre-tilling/treatment at all.

A couple of years ago I tried to plant in the ground. I know I was dealing with clay so I tilled up 3 rows, added garden soil, manure and planted. Didn't work, the clay acted like a bath tub and held the water...

You saved me from saying it.

Apply Roundup or a Roundup like product (hint: read the label and get the one with 47% glyphosate chemical name doesn't matter its all the same shite) make sure it doesn't have any other active ingredient.

Once dead till it up work it good with shovel and do what TClayboy said.

Its never a good idea to amend your soil with "other soil". In some instances it could lead to poor drainage, which is why you will hear never to amend soil with potting soil, etc when you plant trees.

Leaning to this...so no killing the grass beforehand? Just sat it right down on top of it?

What does this mean? I've always mixed top soil and maneuer and have had successful results
