What you got?
I'll have to come up with more specifics, but Police (to bad Sting), Metallica, Faces (to a lot of bad Rod Stewart), Traffic (to Winwood cheese), Zeppelin (to bad Plant), Live, and Chicago come to mind.
Maybe contrast best song to cheesiest (not just worst).
Not a great example but: Bowie's Starman to China Girl.
Better? R.E.M. Driver 8 to Shiny Happy People or Radio Song.

My choice as well. If he doesn't make that song I doubt that anyone ever give him the kind of shite he gets.

No offense, but I can't stand that hipster too cool for school attitude. This idea that the legendary artist of the 60s or 70s somehow sold out because they had some popular solo hits in the 80s. Frankly, I like the solo music Sting, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, etc made in the 80s. A lot of that "cheese" has stood up 25+ years after being released and is better than 99% of popular music produced today.
