Anyone have an older (2001-2002) Polaris ATV? 4wd issues.

Got a new to me bike and I finally got it out in the mud. I've suspected that the 4wd wasn't working since the lights on the dash weren't lighting up and the speedometer doesn't work, outside of lighting up. Apparently the speedos are sensitive to water and without it working the 4wd doesn't engage, due to some wheel speed sensor. I've read up on how to over ride it (basically short to ground that comparator circuit), but I need something that I can switch on and off so my son doesn't ruin the bike by engaging it at speed.

Anyone dealt with this?

Bike as received:

Took off some bits and all of the warning stickers:

Me confirming the 4wd doesn't work...notice my pants and shoes on the back.

My buddy had a Sportsman 600. It saw the shop more than the woods. They are fun bikes when the run but they are hard to keep running from what I have seen.

My dad had a polaris dealership.

they were junk, they kept the mechanics real busy.

this was years ago though, maybe they were better, now. I sure do like the Rangers though.

Good looking bike.

Just put a switch in the wire that you jump to ground with...

I priced speedos after I made this post and they are $350+. Looks like a toggle switch is the answer.

yea just put a toggle.

make sure and keep the frt hubs serviced. dont use transmissiin fluid ib them.

only used Polaris hub fluid im them.
that bike is covered in grease fittings if you will grade it regularly it will last for a long time.

Seems like a good thing. I don't know about 4 wheelers, but what is the longevity vs sealed stuff?
