I seem to get mixed reviews on this.

10W 30 is what I am talking about here.

Brigs lawnmover engine. What kind of oil is best? Any ole motor oil? Specific small engine oil? Non detergent oil? I seem to hear different things. I always had cheap mowers and never changed oil. Ran them hard and they worked fine.
Now I have a nice mower and I want to make sure it lasts

Manual says Brigs oil, well that's because that is their brand.

Snapper push mower

You can get lawnmower oil at Wally World. Prolly the same thing in a different bottle, but who knows.

I think you're thinking too hard.

Use regular engine oil of the specified viscosity grade and change it at the specified intervals. If you're REALLY worried, check the what certifications the brigs oil has on the bottle against some automotive engine oil. I bet the automotive oil meets some much more stringent standards than the brigs oil.

I looked but did not see any. Even checked by the mowers. Guess I can go to a local dealer and pick it up, but was hoping good ole motor oil (any major brand) would work.

Yeh probably over thinking it. I read the manual about the oil and it got me thinkin.

What I get for reading directions

no point in buying briggs brand oil, IMO...they just have someone eles manufacture it for them anyway...

I think you are fine if you use any of the well-known brands. buy whatever weight the manuafacturer recommends for your area....this is typically not a multi viscosity in small engines(i.e. use 30 wt instead of 10W 30)...also, the manual will recommend a grade (something like SE or SF) and you want to buy something that meets that grade...

as for the detergent/nondetergent debate, I have heard a lot of different opinions on that...I typically change my oil regularly, so I actually use oil designed for diesel engines, which gives max cleaning...

I've always user whatever I had laying around for every small engine, and haven't had problems yet.

The newer vtwin briggs motors spec a 0w30 or 5w30 synthetic. I dont knoe about the small ones.

My briggs twin has been running mobil1 5w40 turbo diesel oil for two or three years.

Make sure it doesnt spec a heavier weight oil...if it doesnt, pennzoil yellow bottle or any synthetic will work just fine.

I did find this

Other high quality detergent oils are acceptable if classified for service SF, SG, SH, SJ, or higher. Do not use special additives

I think I will go with 30 weight in something mentioned above.

I never looked at any of those letters. Just Picked a weight and a brand.

I can promise you 10-w30 will turn your mower into a smoke machine.

I've used it for almost all of my small engines because it is what I have laying around. Unless he has some special engine that burns 10-30, I don't believe that.

I've used SuperTech full synthetic 10W-30 for years with excellent results in all seasons. Lawnmower, generator, pressure washer, all do well with it and I've never had issues with fouled plugs or hard starts in cold weather.
